Dark Sky is a specialized weather app designed to give you precipitation and temperature information tailored to your specific location and allows you to quickly view information from other areas. It offers a forecasting experience unlike any other weather app on the market. While it doesn't offer a comprehensive package of weather data, it may be just what you're looking for.
Visual representations: On each page of this app, you'll find unique graphic presentations of weather data. The main feature is an interactive radar map in the form of a globe that you can spin to see any area you choose. You can also zoom in on a selected area, and you can switch the overlay from precipitation to temperature. Additionally, there are graphs to show the projected temperature for the next 20 or so hours, as well as an animated graph showing how much precipitation your area will likely receive over the next hour, broken down into 10-minute increments.
Notification options: One of the most useful features of this app is the Notifications, which you can set to alert you when it's about to start raining or snowing. You can adjust these notifications to appear for light, moderate, or only heavy precipitation, depending on your preference.
Reliability: Notifications did pop up during testing, and they were somewhat accurate in terms of when the rain would start. But they didn't come up every time it started raining, and so to be sure you weren't about to walk out into a downpour, you'd have to open the app and check manually.
Dark Sky is a fun app to play with, and it can be quite useful under certain circumstances. If you want to know more than precipitation and temperature forecasts, you'll have to consult another app. But if you're mainly concerned about not getting caught in a storm, it's a good option to have on hand, and it costs $3.99 on the App Store.
Dark Sky can tell you at a glance exactly when it will rain (or snow) up to an hour in advance, so youre free to walk the dog or run out to lunch and know youll stay dry. You can also explore the most beautiful weather animation youve ever seen, both forward in time or back. (Dark Sky is available in the US, UK and Ireland.)YOUR WEATHER, DOWN TO THE MINUTE Using GPS, Dark Sky is able to create forecasts for your precise location, giving you minute-to-minute predictions for the next hour and detailed forecasts for the next day and week.BEAUTIFUL WEATHER ANIMATIONS The same technology that powers Dark Skys predictions also allows us to make the worlds first perfectly smooth radar animation. Other apps show you a chunky slideshow that makes it nearly impossible to tell how storms are moving. But Dark Skys radar animation lets you see the actual path of the storm: how it moved in the past, and where its going in the future. PUSH NOTIFICATIONS Dark Sky can send you an alert before it starts raining at your exact location. Even if you haven't opened the app in days, Dark Sky will know when you're in the path of a storm.
What's new in this version:
- Disabling Location Services will no longer cause the app to yell and curse at you.- Fixed a problem where the app would occasionally report rain when there wasn't any (most often at night).- Fixed an erroneous warning of notifications being disabled.- Some minor bug fixes that, as a coder, are too embarrassing to list.
