CNET editors' review

Reviewed by: Jessica Dolcourt on January 26, 2010

What you get with the latest version of PaintShop Pro is a midlevel photo editor with a low learning curve and some very nice editing and output features. The easily navigable interface puts photos front and center and surrounds them with tools and menus. It doesn't have all the pixel-pushing prowess of its pricier competitors, but PaintShop Pro X3 does add a few significant enhancements and new features. Support for HD video projects is the biggie here, as more users are investing in fancier digital cameras and in high-def computers and TV screens.

Shutterbugs will also appreciate the new RAW feature (called the RAW Lab), which is a specialized editor for processing RAW images. It's a feature similar to those found in Adobe's Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Lightroom.

Corel has also acknowledged an uptick in the popularity of social networks by baking in more sharing options, specifically for Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube. In addition to sprinkling some new editing tools into PaintShop Photo Pro X3, Corel has turned on the capability to import and export HD videos. The multimedia photo editor contains templates for photo projects found in other Corel products, like Corel Digital Studio 2010. Though the templates offer simple, visually exciting ways to get started on a photo book or a slide show, those who dip into them often will find themselves limited to the same handful of designs.

It's clear that PaintShop Pro X3 is aimed at enthusiast-level photographers who prefer a clean, all-in-one app to not just edit but also process their photos onto a disc, an online album, or a photo project like a slideshow. Pros who prefer to get into the nitty gritty details of image editing should look elsewhere, but others would benefit from downloading PaintShop Pro's trial software.

"Several bugs - Customer Support Useless"

by GaryLentz on March 13, 2010

Pros: No major changes of menu items from PSP X2 Ultimate. So the layout is very familar.

Cons: Customer support is almost impossible to access or reach. I spent over 9 hours over the last 4 days on hold during 5 telephone calls. Finally got through yesterday. I was promised an expedited retrun call from tech support. Still waiting!

Summary: I go back to Ver. 3 (3 1/2" floppies) and have purcahsed and used every version since then. I was very happy with and still am happy with PSP X2 Ultimate. I restore old photographs and scan negatives and slides. I do this for fun and profit. Af... read more >>

    "Yes, it's Buggy"

    by Wallace33 on March 7, 2010

Pros: Interface is more readable than PhotoShop Elements. Lots of potentially useful features.

Cons: SLOW, not stable, stops running. Lack of any downloadable Owners Manual unless I missed it.

Summary: The program just is not stable. I installed to a Win 7 64 bit computer with 8 GB of memory and as others have noted, it is SLOW. Also, the program stops responding when I try to move from one component to another and has crashed while in the edito... read more >>

"X3 is useless for Nikon RAW"

    by wallyo66 on February 25, 2010

Pros: several great features, reasonable price

Cons: Very buggy and crash prone. Terrible customer service

Summary: I have used all versions of PaintShop Pro since version 5. I upgraded to PSPP X2 Ultimate, but discovered a bug where no Nikon RAW (NEF) files (at least from any Nikon "D" Camera) could be saved directly in uncompressed TIF format. This process is l... read more >>

Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

    "PSPX3 a seriously flawed product"

    by OldRadioGuy2 on February 24, 2010

Pros: Scripting, ability to easily customize, a broad array of features, -- these have long been reasons to use this powerful software through many versions. In recent versions, new tools appeared to speed editing of photos and appeal to photographers.

Cons: PSPX3 is not ready for prime time. Since its acquisition by Corel, PSP has been buggy with bugs continuing from one version to the next. Customer support is lousy, perhaps the worst of any "major" software company I have encountered.

Summary: I am a longtime user of PSP, and I like the evolution to make the product one aimed at the photography market. I like the darker color of the workspace (you can turn that off), and I like the new and handy time-saving tools that have been added over... read more >>

Version: Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3

"Memory and CPU hog, awful color scheme"

by alegr on February 22, 2010

Pros: Can (almost) open latest .PSD format

Cons: Uses some awful "optimizer" during installation, which burns 100% CPU for 10 minutes. After installation, the program would hang on startup while consuming 100% of CPU for a few minutes. When I opened a .PSD file, uses 500MB of RAM. Hangs on save.

Summary: PSP 7 was the best. Then Corel took over and fouled it.
