    "Cookware Deluxe 3.0"

    May 17, 2007   |   By judygruhn

    Version: CookWare Deluxe 3.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have waited to leave a review of this until I had used the product for a while. I have been a fan of Cookware Deluxe since early days, having used it both in Systems 9 and 10. I was very pleased when version tracker informed me of this current verions. I couldn't wait to see the changes!

While I still have some problems with this version, on the whole I can do nothing but praise it. Recipes are imported into it from previous versions almost effortlessly. You can now have more than one choice in any category - for example, a recipe can be listed as party, company, poultry or whatever in the cookbook category, can have multiple major ingredients, etc.

You can create market lists, create menus and save menus and search sets so that the next time you need to look for, let's say, chicken salad recipes, you can just pull up that set. And as you add new recipes in that category, they will automatically be added to the saved set.

There is spell checking and automatic formatting - though this can cause some problems as there are times the program needs to search through multiple databases which can be frustrating as you type and wait.

Using Find to bring up a recipe is a breeze!

It is a snap to drag or cut and paste recipes from the web into the program; you can drag photos right to the recipe page as well.

I do feel there are some problems to be worked out in subsequent versions- at times the program can seem painfully slow; typing in a recipe is slower than copying or pasting and it doesn't seem to matter if you have formatting turned on or off. However, much of the frustration I felt at first has disappeared as I have used the program and I feel there will be much improvement in subsequent versions. As always you can great support from the author

    "Great Job."

    Version: CookWare Deluxe 2.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using Cookware Deluxe for over 1 1/2 years without any issues with loss of data. Of course, I do regular backups of all the data on my iMac. Mitch has always promptly responded to any email questions I have had. I find this app to be the most user friendly of several cookbook programs that I have tried. I particularly like how easy it is to add recipes from other sources on the web. I can even scan old hand written recipes and drag and drop them into Cookware Deluxe without problems. I have no problem recommending this app to anyone looking to organize the shelves of recipes that are taking up so much space in the kitchen library.

    "DO NOT UPDATE....."

...until you have backed up your personal recipes. Also, it will not recognize your previous registration numbers.

I just lost over 100 recipes by updating from 2.0 to 2.1, all my preferences, cookbooks, sources, and everything else I took over two years to accumulate.

I'm going to be looking at some other cookbook programs. I'm done with this!

    "This is the Best!"

    Version: CookWare Deluxe 2.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I think this is the best recipe software out there. I've used a lot of different programs, some of which cost twice as much (I'm looking in your direction, XtremeMac Recipe Manager!), and have found this to be the easiest to add recipes to. And now it's even easier than it was in CookWare 1.5. The Recipe Cleaner functions are integrated into the 2.1 update, so you can drag and drop a recipe off a web site and format it right in CookWare. I also like the new features to move the title and ingredients with one click. And I drag and drop photos right into the recipe. Makes life easier.

I didn't notice the problems other people had with the size of the application being overlapped by the dock because I have my monitor set to high resolution. And I never relied on shopping list or scaling features in cookbook software, so whatever shortcomings people have in those departments don't apply to me. What I mainly look for is easy browsing, searching and input of recipes. CookWare Deluxe has it all. The ipod shopping list feature seems like it could be useful, but I haven't tried it yet. And the customer support is excellent! Great work!

    "Almost perfect...but..."

    Version: CookWare Deluxe 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
    Hello:

Nice program, nice GUI, but I'd really love to see a couple mroe major features, then you'd win over my heart...and my wallet.

As already mentioned by another, the absense of a resizing function in the recipe field is a serious ommission. Additionally, this needs at least an import/export data feature for "shopping lists". Ideally you'd include a feature for utilizing the shopping list compiled data to update or subtract from a larger or supplies database. These additions shouldn't be difficult. After all, this is a FileMakerPro app! : )

Perhaps the additiona of a larder/stores addition/subtraction DB update feature addition would be pat of a PRO feature. I, for one, would be willing to pay for it. This might include a shelf-life alarm function, or some other method of tracking to allow for cycling through stores to make sure the older foodstuffs get used first. Another handy feaure for such an update might be a labeling print function to allow for easy labeling of expiration dates or batch numbers.

I'd have no compunctions about recommending this to many others if these features are added. Such additions would make the purchase of this application a slam-dunk for those in charge of camp and expedition planning, restaraunt management, as well for those who might be using it as I would be - for emergency and menu planning for use with family food and supply stores.

What are the odds of getting such additions in the near to immediate future? How about a flexible (shopping list) export feature/script so that some of us could at least start coordinating purchasing with our existing supplies?

    Thanks, Dorian

    "Missing on major feature"

This program is really nice. The interface is extremely nice with easy input. However, this also translate to not being able to resize the recipe. This is a great feature of the Computer Cookbook. Add this ability to this program and this would be a fantastic cookbook.

    "Worthy Upgrade"

    Version: CookWare Deluxe 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have used CookWare Deluxe since version 1.2 and am very happy. This new version has some features that make an already good program even better. The new "Recipe Editor" eliminates the need to manually reformat and rearrange the text of recipes found on the internet. There are still a few features I have not used but so far everything has worked perfectly.

    Version: CookWare Deluxe 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This program has problems that the programmer always blames on FileMaker. Nothing is more infuriating than having a program in Mac OS X that opens a window that drops below the dock and scrolling with a mouse doesn't work! How are you supposed to grab the bottom corner of the window when it is below the dock?! He blames it all on FileMaker. Maybe that is true, but I hope someone comes up with a great recipe program that isn't based on FileMaker if that is really the problem. This program is useless in it's present state. Even with 2.0 the icons are dimmed which usually means they are unavailable, bad design. Other problems listed above are not fixed!
