Clucast is a Firefox extension that lets users attach clues to any topic they find on the Web. Sound confusing? Well, you're not the only one left scratching your head.

A program isn't very easy to use when you have to view not one, not two, but four demos to figure out what it is and how it works. We finally figured out that clues are basically one user's opinion of a particular subject matter. After downloading, a toolbar appeared on our browser window. Clucast is free, but you'll have to register before you can add any of your own clues. When we clicked the Markers button, several terms were highlighted on the Web page, but when we hovered our mouse over each marker, a blank window appeared--no clues in sight. When we tried to add a clue of our own, we highlighted the text and clicked the Add Clue button. Again, a blank window appeared. We tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program to see if it was a glitch on our end, but we still had the same problem.

So after sitting through four demos, we were never able to view or add clues. In theory, this program sounds like a great idea, but in practice, it needs more work before we can give it a recommendation.

Publisher's description

From Clupedia Corporation :

Clucast is a Firefox add-on that offers the wisdom of crowds the collective opinions of people about anything and everything displayed on the Web. The diversity of opinions in a crowd makes the crowd often more right than any single expert. In his eloquent book entitled The Wisdom of Crowds, James Surowiecki explains why the many are smarter than the few and how collective wisdom shapes businesses, societies, and nations.

At Clupedia, we refer to the wisdom of crowds as the meta Web - a Web about the Web, built by the people for the people. While we are all drowning in a sea of information on the World Wide Web, the meta Web will keep us afloat with the help of clues from crowds. Think of those clues as shortcuts which cut through all that clutter and make the current Web much more informative, collaborative, connected, and convenient. Version 0.9.1.20071005 includes unspecified updates.

    "Best in its category"

by Amiraka on October 30, 2007

Pros: I love how the clues that I create spread everywhere. If I have something to say, and I usually do, Clucast seems to me as the best tool to have my views be heard.

Also, the product is quite elegant and simple to use. It took me a bit longer than what I would have liked to figure out at first the difference between Clucast and its competitors, but when I did, I'm glad I stuck with it. It seems like it's a winner.

Cons: Clupedia needs to beef up the functionality of Clucast to compete with competitors like StumbleUpon and Yoono. While Clucast has by far the best spreading techniques, it lacks social bookmarking and online discovery features. However, from what I could gather from their collateral at their web site, I wouldn't be surprise to find those lacking features in their next release. These guys are sharp!!

Also, there are not enough clues around. But I guess the product just got launched, so I shouldn't expect much in terms of getting the wisdom of crowds as they claim. Then again, with time, I bet Clucast will be one of the winners if not THE winner.

"We'll see how they deliver, promising idea for sure"

by chbrja on November 6, 2007

Pros: I like the idea of having my information available across the entire web without forcing the user to find a specific web page. My opinion can be viewed by anyone when my clues are marked which is nice.

Cons: I want a search function in the toolbar, as is i must search for things in google then view the markers for them otherwise I can just view the random clues on random sites i visit.

"It's another dimension of the internet browser"

    by MHoffman007 on November 6, 2007

Pros: Everyone is caught up on the social network now of days, but this takes it to another lever. Clupedia is branching off another leg to the internet to make it viewable at your desire. The toolbar is a bit bulky, but worth the realestate on my 22 inch wide screen monitor. This is a fast application, and much easier than searching for reviews on other sites. Plus you can register once with them and add review across the entire web on anthing without having to logon to 5 different sites. This is going to make life easier, I can see that. Good work Clupedia, you have my vote!

Cons: Sometimes the clues load but never appear.

Takes a while before my clue is visible.

Some Clues are worthless or not informative.

"Slick implementation of a very cool idea."

    by la_gigolo on November 2, 2007

Pros: I like the concept very much. When I express my opinion about a topic, my opinion is visible everywhere on the net where that topic exists. The core concept that this toolbar is built on is very powerful and full of potential. The user interface is very pleasant and easy to move around in.

Cons: I think the user interface could be spruced up a bit and there is still a little bit of a delay once I submit a review before it is visible in my lists.

"Clucast - Your Ticket to Fame"

by Geekier on October 30, 2007

Pros: I used before similar product like Clucast including Yoono, Diigo, StumbleUpon, Delicious, and I am forgetting couple more. Each has its pros & cons. Even though Clucast seems the least mature of those competing products, it is by far the most powerful where it counts the most ? BEING HEARD. You see, with Clucast, the clue that you create at a web page, it can be viewed by other Clucast users from any other web page where whatever you clued appears. So Clucast is your ticket to fame if you really have something to say, and more so than any other product. It?s so cool!!!

Clucast also includes a very neat feature ? you can instantly blog your clue. Albeit, the current version seems to be limited to just Wordpress and Bloggers, but I am sure that they will come up with more blogging platform. From that perspective, and since I am a blogger, Clucast is an ideal traffic generator

Cons: It would be nice to limit the number of markers that appear on a web page. I also would like to have some mechanism to select what clues I?d like to see. Even though this is not a problem now, but I can see it becoming a problem because I figured that Clucast will be successful, and it success could lead to its demise because of lack of searching and filtering.
