Publisher's Description
From Steven Shiau:
Clonezilla is a partition or disk clone tool similar to Norton Ghost. It saves and restores only used blocks in hard drive. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (Server Edition). Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus) computers simultaneously.
Features of Clonezilla are Free (GPL) Software, Filesystem supported ext2, ext3, ext4, reiserfs, xfs, jfs of GNU/Linux, FAT, NTFS of MS Windows, and HFS+ of Mac OS, Multicast is supported in Clonezilla SE, which is suitable for massively clone. You can also remotely use it to save or restore a bunch of computers if PXE and Wake-on-LAN are supported in your clients.

"poor results; unclear whether the software is at fault"
Version: Clonezilla 1.2.11-23
Pros
Booting into Linux guarantees that the disk that is being cloned is static.
Cons
(major) I've made several attempts to use this software, so far without success.
(minor) The user interface is ugly.Summary
I've used this software several times, so far without success.
On computer #1, I cloned the boot drive to an identical drive (same manufacturer and model #). I was able to boot on the cloned drive, but some drivers (Ethernet and audio) did not work on the cloned copy. The drive is supposedly good because I was able to do a full format without getting any errors.
On computer #2, I made two attempts to clone the boot drive. In both cases, the clone operation failed, and the error messages were so obscure that I have no idea why the clone operation failed. The target drive formatted without errors and source and target drives have exactly the same capacities, so it is unclear why the cloning operation fails.

"Really useful software. Misleading CNET classification."
Version: Clonezilla 1.2.11-23
Pros
Equivalent commercial products capable of multicast imaging/cloning cost thousands (Ghost Corporate Ed). This software does the same job and is completely free. Using the Live CD you can image machines running just about any operating system you can think of. I am an IT professional and I use this software regularly and it hasn't failed me yet. I take my hat off to the authors. They are also willing to take the time to answer queries on the forums which shows real commitment to their users.
The CNET summary lists this as a Windows application - this is misleading as this is Linux software which you can boot from a Live CD and clone Windows but it is not a Windows application.Cons
Its obvious from some of the negative comments that the authors do not understand what this software is for. There is no setup file or Windows .exe because this software does not run in Windows - its Linux only period.
My only negative comments are that perhaps the english instructions/documentation are not perfect but these guys are from Taiwan ! I don't find this really detracts from the function of the software.Summary
To CNET - the classification of this software is misleading - it won't run in Windows. You can clone windows using a Linux Live CD but that's the only connection with Windows.
Really useful - particularly the multicast server edition which means you can use a lightweight server to image tens of clients simultaneously.
