"No license available"

September 27, 2012  |  By lorigee

2012-09-27 16:30:02  |  By lorigee

 |  Version: Audio Hijack 2.2.6

Pros

The program works fine for the initial testing, until you find out that you need a license to continue.

Cons

The program intentionally adds noise to any sound file after the initial tests unless you purchase a license. When you try to purchase a license and register, you will find the program is no longer supported. You cannot purchase a license, making the program essentially useless. (Why don't they want my money? I was ready to pay for the license.)

Summary

The program is no longer supported. It adds noise after initial tests. You cannot purchase a license for it. Therefore, it is no longer worthwhile. It's a pity, because the first tests were great and I wanted to purchase the program. I don't know why people bother to make great software and then refuse to take your money because it's "old." Seems like easy money to me.

"I used Hijack 2.2.6 reliably w superb results for years"

 |  Version: Audio Hijack 2.2.6

Pros

Pretty intuitive.
Absolutely accurate to one-hundreth seconds, if you need to trim/create tracks so precisely.
Seems to be able to save unlimited number of scheduled items - e.g. every 54-minute long radio program, ev day, etc. WOW.

Cons

Can't sort list of saved actions/schedules.
No apparent way to create dead space for between tracks.
If recording a RA stream, Hijack doesn't know when one RA Player is already open altho it only records the correct source, it's messy.
No auto-trash.

Summary

Incredible power and ease of use for a free app - works integrally with iTunes. Beautiful! As is everything from Amoeba, IMHO. (from a happy customer for years!)

This is a free update for licensed users to make Audio Hijack OSX 10.5 compatible. Audio Hijack's developers have a long history of consumer-friendly policies and applications, and I am thankful they're offering this update to existing customers who don't want to purchase the Pro version. Thanks Rogue Amoeba!

Like Airfoil, Audio Hijack is a lovely little bit of kit. It's stable and reliable, and I use it to record streamed media so I can create "podcasts" to listen to later.

As Neil Kinnock might have said, it's lovely, lovely, lovely.

Summary

Before I got hold of Audio Hijack I'd been recording through my iMic using the high end (and over priced) Bias Peak. It worked OK but barely. Constant problems with managing volume changes via the attached HiFi system and picking up system sounds on my recordings.

For those who've never tried Hijack, I'd say the best thing about the recordings it makes are that the audio is pulled straight off the digital stream directly from the application being hijacked. Therefore it's clean, free from system sounds and the limitations of my analog HiFi. And most importantly, I can change the volume of my speaker output without affecting the recording.

Took a little while to get used to the interface, but it works reliably with every application I've tried to hijack, including: iTunes, Radio365 player, and VLC player.

Since I've already paid for it, I'm comfortable with Bias Peak to split the hours long AIFF files I tend to hijack into svelte sized MP3s for the iPod. Therefore this version suits me well. I'm sure Hijack Pro would have been a much cheaper way to go. (sigh)

"Audio Hijack is excellent"

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I used to use AH to record BBC Radio 3 over the internet and I was always pleased with the results. Now I use it to record from my new DAB tuner and the recordings are even better.

When I first attempted recording DAB I was unable to get the audio signal from the digital input of my M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card through to AH, so I emailed Rogue Amoeba for advice. I got a very useful response the following day. Their advice helped me progress but not to the stage where I was able to make a recording. It turned out that the fault lay not with Audio Hijack but with the latest update to the M-Audio Delta control panel, so I reinstalled the previous version (1.2.1) and it works superbly.

Audio Hijack even allows me to boost the unprocessed signal used by BBC Radio 3 so that the levels are better.

I use Audio Hijack very often and think it is worth every penny (or cent).

What's new in version 3.3
  • Major Enhancement: It's now possible for advanced users to lower audio processing latency! The new latency slider in Audio Hijack's preferences can be adjusted to reduce or remove any slight echoing you may hear while monitoring audio flow through Audio Hijack.

  • Major Enhancement: Audio Hijack now offers safer recording for AAC and Apple Lossless (ALAC) files, to avoid any loss of audio in the event of an issue. There are now two different â??Containerâ?? options. The new .mp4 is recommended, but the older .m4a option remains available.

  • Major Enhancement: Capturing audio from the Slack application is now fully supported when Instant On is installed.

  • Major Enhancement: The Instant On component has been updated to version 8.2.6, with a plethora of small fixes and improvements.

  • Enhancement: The Menu Bar Meters block now has proper Retina art in the menu bar. Our long, blurry nightmare is finally over. As well, the desired meter type is now correctly saved.

  • Enhancement: Files in the Recordings tab can now be right-clicked to access a contextual menu, offering controls for manipulating the recording.

  • Enhancement: The Schedule area of the Home window will now visually indicate when conflicts exist between timers.

  • Enhancement: The Time Shift block has been improved in several ways, fixing a display issue with large jumps, providing a better VoiceOver value, and improving the explanatory text.

  • Enhancement: The default quality levels have been improved for both MP3 and AAC recordings.

  • Enhancement: Presets for several blocks have been improved to save additional settings, including saving album art as part of Recorder block presets, saving all settings in the Application source block, and saving the specified channels in an Output block.

  • Enhancement: When an audio device's name changes, Audio Hijack will immediately reflect the new name.

  • Enhancement: A selected item in the Recordings area will now collapse if multiple files are selected. As well, Recordings (and Timers in the Schedule tab) will toggle between expanded and collapsed when clicked, as well as with the left and right arrow keys.

  • Enhancement: Audio Hijack can convert .mp4 files to .m4a, for compatibility purposes. To access the conversion option, right-click the file in the Recordings area

  • Enhancement: VoiceOver improvements! When VoiceOver is active, a â??Pin Popover Openâ?? option is added to contextual menus for blocks. The popover window's role has also been adjusted, so popovers appear in VoiceOver's 'Window Chooser'. Finally, labels for the â??Closeâ?? and â??Pinâ?? buttons in popovers have been improved.

  • Enhancement: AirPlay output device name changes are now better recognized, and a better title (â??No AirPlay Receiver Selectedâ??) is shown if AirPlay doesn't have a destination set.

  • Bug Fix: The display of app names for background processes (accessible by holding option while clicking the Source select in an Application block) has been improved.

  • Bug Fix: An issue where HE-AAC files could suffer from slow playback in the Recordings tab has been corrected.

  • Bug Fix: The low-end Hz frequency readouts for the DeHum, Low Pass, and Mono Enhancer blocks no longer incorrectly round to the nearest 10 Hz.

  • Bug Fix: A recursion where tokens in Recorder fields could refer back to one another and cause an infinite loop has been fixed.

  • Bug Fix: A crash which could be caused by malformed ID3 tags has been corrected.

  • Bug Fix: An issue where incompletely loaded windows could appear when importing a Session has been corrected.

  • Other: Audio Hijack now better conveys why there's a delay if AAC files are finalized on quit.

  • Other: Many smaller improvements have also been made, including better trial warning text in the Session's LCD, limiting the dimensions of saved album art (900x900px), cosmetic improvements to the Recordings tab, cosmetic improvements for missing audio devices, revised art for missing inputs, improved handling of playback via spacebar in the Recordings area, and improved popover placement near the menu bar.
