Atari Arcade Hits

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET Staff on February 27, 2009

Nostalgic moments should be sweet and brief. Thankfully, the trial version of this Atari game package lasts only five minutes. Atari Arcade Hits is a collection of six of the company's earliest and most popular video games, including the classics Pong, Centipede, Asteroids, Tempest, Missile Command, and Super Breakout. Thus, you probably know what to expect: fairly primitive graphics, lots of beeping and static, awkward controls and repetitive action. But isn't that why we loved these games in the first place? Simple to use and entertaining--if not just for a moment--this program won't disappoint old-school Atari fans. Play for five minutes, then put the program back on the shelf with your other '80s games to collect dust.

    "bad mouse control"

    October 3, 2006  |   By rikkirivers

    Version: Atari Arcade Hits 1.0

    Pros

retro style looks just like the original games. like playing an old old arcade game. it would be fun and nostalgic if it worked right.

    Cons

my mouse control didn't work right. I tried playing missile command, asteroids, and breakout. They look like the original games. like some of the other guys said, Atari should have released this for free. They haven't done anything to improve the games. They're just like the originals. if you want to play original games, just download the MAME emulator. MAME games work better.

    "Do they need the money?"

    Version: Atari Arcade Hits 1.0

    Pros

I get to support future re-releases of old games. Ooh and my computer gets a fresh new set of ad-ware; just what it needs to keep it runnin strong!

    Cons

Atari thinks its doing people a favor by releasing this collection of old hits. It should be about as well recieved as a Color Me Badd reunion tour. The 10 minute trial period really limits you from wanting to go all the way to 12 minutes. How in the world is this a 11MB download? I sat down to play through these games and when I was done my grilled cheese sandwich wasn't even done cooking. The price is 10 bucks for this dabocle? Hey atari guys: I went to yardsale the other day and I got the entire atari library for the change that was in my car's ash tray.

"Full of adware, stay away from this one!"

    March 5, 2005  |   By Gamester

    Version: Atari Arcade Hits 1.0

    Pros

It doesn't have any pros, it's garbage.

    Cons

It looks like they took a few old favorites and packaged them in a bunch of adware so that they can track your surfing. You can't even play it without doing a bunch of silly stuff. These people should be ashamed of themselves for ruining such great old games, with a bunch of ripoff trash that just slows your computer down.

    "Full of spyware, don't download!!"

    March 5, 2005  |   By ryanj

    Version: Atari Arcade Hits 1.0

    Pros

None, it's just a con to put spyware on your computer.

    Cons

This thing is nothing but a hassle, and it won't even let you play any games until you jump through a bunch of adware hoops. This is a pure con, nothing more, don't download it unless you want to spend 10 minutes getting all their spyware back off your computer.

    "cute little demo"

    November 29, 2004  |   By dyspyzthespyz

    Version: Atari Arcade Hits 1.0

    Summary

it's an alright demo, games only last for about 5 minutes then that's it, games cost about (US)$10.00 but really if you want the games it's cheaper to go to the mall or megastore and pick you up one of the little all in one games which i think this is just a preview of those, atleast with those, all you do is plug them into your tv and play, and usually consist of about 5-15 games all in one.

    "Worth five minutes"

    July 3, 2004  |

    Version: Atari Arcade Hits 1.0

    Summary

If you have a hankering to play one of the old atari games and your on high-speed this is worth it. The demo versions only last 10 minutes but I got tired of them before the time expired. Graphics are... well, like the originals. Tempest blanked out my monitor and gave me a resolution error message.
