Pros
I can't believe all the whining and complaining about "Error-39" but NOT ONE solution or account of anyone even attempting to solve this problem on their own. No wonder Mac has only a few percent market share. Anyway, here is some advice that worked for this PC user who recently had reason to compute with fruit:
After installing OS 8.5 from CD I went on-line and upgraded Internet Explorer to v5.1.7 so that I could properly view this webpage. Then I downloaded this update and got the "Error-39". Then I re-downloaded it, meanwhile doing some internet research. I found out that to turn off extensions I had to boot up while holding down the SHIFT key. I did this, then clicked on "Mac OS 8.6 Update.smi", and it installed flawlessly, no "Error -39".
There you have it, one solution that worked for a PC-turned-Mac-user-for-a-day.

I know, I know, I should get out of the dark ages and get a new Mac and OS X, but my my job helping people run their macs doesn't afford me that yet.
The biggest drag about 8.6 now is I have the hardest time finding the 8.6 compatible software anymore. (Which is why I've come here to look for some) -

wow my old mac had OS 7.5 on it and i could not belave that this update worked great, i just needed to restart the mac after instal and that's all it said os 8.6 on start up :) ! and yes i did find it runing better o yea and IT"S FREE, don;t forget some program need OS 8.6 and up to run ! so this is a must have !
