Editors' review

Logic Pro 9 is the latest version of Apple's music recording, editing, and mixing suite. This is not a cheap package, but you get a lot of power built in. Logic Pro 9 installs easily and the interfaces are all Apple-quality, meaning easy to use and understand.

Logic Pro 9 starts with the writing and recording component. You can see traditional musical notation on the screen if you want to compose, or you can play instruments through a MIDI interface and see the resulting notes in real time (really cool!). You can record to separate tracks, or multiple tracks at the same time. There's a huge library of effects and samples you can deploy, too. Once you've recorded the basic tracks, you lay them out in the sound editor and manipulate the different tracks to achieve the ideal sound. There's a lot of power in Logic Pro 9 for this task, including Flex Time, which lets you adjust timing easily. There's a virtual mixing console that gives you the same power as external mixing boards. You can even manipulate surround sound easily. Finally, you can add various effects and save your resulting masterpiece.

Logic Pro 9 has lots of interfaces and plug-ins for other devices and effects, and it also works with GarageBand tracks. For musicians amateur and professional, Logic Pro 9 is one of the easiest and most powerful audio suites available, and even after working with it for a year we have still not seen all it has to offer.

    "Useless to long time users"

    July 22, 2013   |   By ianorth

Version: Apple Logic Pro X 10.0

    Pros

The iPad Remote is very cool. The Transposer is good as well.

    Cons

The lack of support for all my 32 bit plugins is inexcusable. Furthermore I have been using Logic for 8 years and so many things do not work like they did on previous versions that I feel like I am facing a learning curve that is ridiculously steep for an experienced user. And it does seem very much like Garage Band Pro.

    Summary

I am going back to Logic 9. Apple is an arrogant company that has little if any loyalty to its customers. It doesn't matter to them how many products of theirs you have purchased - if you're not covered by a current warranty they won't talk to you without paying a fee. I would never buy a program that only runs on one platform again. Apple has a monopoly with Logic and they abuse it.

    "Would NOT Update"

    December 23, 2011   |   By weh058--2008

    Version: Apple Logic Pro 9.1.6

    Pros

As far as I am concerned there were no Pros since this update would not work.

    Cons

I have Logic Pro 9.1.3 and the update would not do its thing.

    Summary

Would NOT Update with this update.

    Updated on Dec 31, 2011

Updating this review so others will be aware of the problem I experienced. I had problems updating Logic Pro, because I had renamed the app. In order for the update to work with no hitches the app's name HAS TO BE "LOGIC.APP" Once I renamed it to that the update worked like a charm. Excellent.

"If you do music on an Apple, no reason NOT to have it."

    June 09, 2011   |   By skydotcom

    Version: Apple Logic Pro 9.1.4

    Pros

First, it's made by Apple and works seamlessly with the hardware. Then, it rivals ProTools as an audio recorder, while costing thousands less. PLUS, it includes samplers, synths, effects, works w/video? The pros seem endless.

    Cons

If you think there are any cons with LogicStudio, you probably don't know much about the history of recorded music (or much about LogicStudio).

    Summary

Buy it. Use it. Thrill yourself and the world.

    "Makes it easy and quick"

    October 22, 2009   |   By chordboard

    Version: Apple Logic Pro 8.0.1

    Pros

I love how all files are grouped together in a folder, that I can copy to the server after working on music, for EASY backup and restore. I use the software to compose music, and Logic lets me make notes of song details in line with the music.

    Cons

    No complaints

    Summary

As a composer, I can take a song idea from start to conceptual finish in just minutes to hours, depending on number of tracks desired. Once I name the song, a new folder is created with the name of the song and ALL relevant sound files, including MP3 bounces, etc. all organized. It is easy to back this up by dragging the folder to the network server for peace of mind. The folder can be copied to other MACS also running Logic so mixing can take place at another location (very convenient in a network situation).
The DAW is powerful. I can load movies into the time line with an audio track automatically created, so composition with video is possible. Mixing with an automated faders board is simple. I use a Tascam 24 channel mixer. A ton of effects are available to sweeten and correct sound, not to mention the boatload of Apple Loops, the percussion is most useful to me.

    "Powerful but unfriendly and glitchy..."

    February 28, 2005   |   By sonicraft

    Version: Apple Logic Pro 7.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I'm switching from DP4. I appreciate the host of features. But the transition has not been intuitive at all. I wish the program was more Logic-al in its interface. There are a few bugs (e.g. audio dropouts during bounce/export, metronome clicks when turned off, waveburner won't import files or say why not, etc. etc.). Hopefully, it will continue to develop under Apple.
