Editors' Review

AppMenu Magic is less of an app than a script that changes the way the name of each app displays in the menu bar. It does this very well, however, actively changing on the fly the name of every app you have open to the icon for that app in the menu bar. Installation takes a moment as key system settings are revised, but afterwards, it runs seamlessly in the background whenever you start a new app.

After downloading the DMG from the developer you must install the script, which requires a handful of steps through a traditional installation screen. This takes a couple of minutes, but the system will handle all of the heavy lifting -- there is no technical work here and no copy-pasting of files. After installation, some menus will reset and your computer will log out. Once logged back in, you'll notice that the name of the currently active app is changed to its icon in the top-left corner of the menu bar. This is cool in its own right, but it also frees up some valuable space on the bar. If you ever want to turn the script off, there is an option in the file menu for every app.

Installation may take a few minutes, but it is still fairly easy, and this script will continue running smoothly in the background, replacing the text with an icon on your menu bar. It's a fun and relatively useful app for a number of different things.

"Wish it worked -"

It fulfills a need I have desired since OSX 10.4 or 10.5 (can't remember exactly): replace that sometimes long, bulky application name with its icon. I REALLY liked the feature and missed it. In fact, I wanted it so much I payed the $5 immediately.

It just doesn't work. It works SOMETIMES, but more often than not I still get the menu name instead of the icon. Also, it will, at times, give me the icon for an individual application SOMETIMES, but not others. Very weird.

So, I paid for it and hope, in time, it will start working better as new versions appear. The two stars are aspirational: that it will work in later versions. And PLEASE: you're welcome for my purchase--the pop-up thanking me, after the first time, is unnecessary.

"Bait and switch--listed as "Free" but is $5"

Saves space on the menu bar like it says.

Classic bait and switch. List as free, then surprise, $5 after 15-days.

Upon installing a supposedly "free" utility as it is listed here, the very first thing that shows up when logging back in is a pop-up that tells you that you have 15-days to evaluate a "free" utility, and then you must pay $5. This is classic bait and switch, and as such, a developer immediately has lost a potential buyer because any trust is immediately lost.

Not sure how to respond to a response, but the question is do I think it's worth $5, ''hard feelings aside''.

I'd easily pony up an App Store 99-cents or if I hadn't been baited and switched, $1.99. But, this left such a sour aftertaste I really am not interested. I uninstalled it and haven't thought twice since.

Actually, the concept/idea is a good one and I'm baffled why Apple doesn't simply make this an option in OS X. I own a MacBook Pro ''retina'' 15-inch model and went looking for something like this to give me better space on the menu bar in the ''best for retina'' mode. I'm one of those people with lots of stuff going on in the menu bar and at least 3 items are hidden in some applications with long names.

If the developer would put it in the App Store at $1.99 but have a Christmas special for a week or so at 99-cents, I'd actually reconsider and buy it. But $5 for what amounts to a utility--and one that doesn't iconize every application by the way--way too much money.
