Editors' review

By being able to craft just about every element of the song, including lyrics and multiple instrumental layers, Anvil Studio makes it almost too easy to compose songs. Its interface isn't very attractive, but with great user guidance and a wealth of features, it's an awesome app for any musician.

Despite being loaded with features, this program downloads really quickly and is light by most standards. Anvil Studio has a great tutorial that opens when you get inside. It's helpful for finding all of the program's cool features, but it doesn't make you click through endless pages before you can get started. Starting your composition is as easy as clicking a few notes on the keyboard. Once they're on the staff, you can move them, draw lyrics over them and even make them harmonize with other notes. There are more than 40 instruments to use and each one can be layered over other sounds so you can get a better idea of what the finished product will sound like. If you don't know a ton about music theory, you might feel a little overwhelmed at the amount of options. Though the program's interface is stuck in the XP era, it makes it easy to surf through the vast number of features and tweaks this program offers.

Having more features than you can use in a sitting is a really good problem to have. No matter what your level of expertise, Anvil Studio offers a wonderful tool to help you compose music. It's a great learning resource, as well.

    "Excellent MIDI editing software"

    July 21, 2014   |   By longtalker

    Version: Anvil Studio 2014.03.01

    Pros

    - Tons of features to process your MIDI file in whatever way you wish
    - Documentation is really good and a brief help screen is usually conveniently found at the bottom of the main window
    - Good error reporting feature if software happens to crash
    - Author is good replying to support emails

    Cons

sometimes a bit hard to figure out how to do simple operations, but that is the case with any complex software (e.g. Photoshop for images)

    Summary

Anvil Studio is well complemented by Musescore, both packages together give you all the tools you could possibly want to work with MIDIs

    "spammy spammy spam spam!"

    April 06, 2013   |   By ze23

    Version: Anvil Studio 2013.03.01

    Pros

the program wouldn't open on my computer. it kept stalling out on the installation.... so i have nothing positive to say about it because i didn't even get to try it!

    Cons

i wasn't even able to use the program. all i got in the download was spammy sign-up-for-our-website garbage... emoticons and backup your hard drive on our cloud site... things like that. the actual program would get halfway into the installation and then it would crash and say i was already installing this program and i would have to close out and start again.

    Summary

i've never had a problem downloading from c|net before, but this program was a giant bomb of nothing good. the actual program i wanted wouldn't even install. it kept crashing out.... though the four or five spam things it came with sure had no problem taking root in my computer. UGH! DELETE!!

    "Great Company"

    December 25, 2012   |   By BobbyBobbert

    Version: Anvil Studio 2012.12.05

    Pros

This has nothing to do with their software but everything to do with the crediblity of the company. I mistakenly had ordered one of the accessory packages. When it arrived, I downloaded the software and found out that I had ordered the wrong package, totally my error. I contacted the company and informed them that I likely had made an error and ordered the wrong accessory package. I will not go into detail, but am happy to say that without hesitation this company is proud of its software but more so, operates its business with integrity and puts the customer first. I would never hesitate to order a product from them in the future.

    Cons

I do not know of one.

"Good programme, does everything it's supposed to."

    May 16, 2012   |   By vilesilencer

    Version: Anvil Studio 2012.05.07

    Pros

Although some are too lazy to get the programme sorted, it does a very good job. At around $100 for the full package, it's well worth the money.

    Cons

No cons if you're a bit patient and persistent. Not a good programme if you have the attention-span of a gnat.

    Summary

I've been using the programme since it was fairly new. I have other programmes such as Finale and Sibelius, and several other studio programmes such as Band In A Box. They all have their strong and weak points, and I prefer each for different situations and applications. For sheer speed of slapping together rough demos consisting of live and synthetic sounds, Anvil is my go-to programme.

"IT IS NOT FREE. THEY ONLY SAY IT IS."

    March 25, 2012   |   By dcamard

    Version: Anvil Studio 2012.03.01

    Pros

    It didn't cause any damage.

    Cons

I would give the interface a 2 out of 10 for intuitive. So by the time you figure out what you're doing and try to record something you're already frustrated and that's when you find out this is FREE TO TRY not FREE, AS IT CLAIMS. Another waste of time while I DEMO MYSELF for their software product. THANKS ANVIL!

    Summary

    Don't waste your time.

    "This program is almost unusable"

    October 29, 2011   |   By djsunkid

    Version: Anvil Studio 2011.10.05

    Pros

Well, what do you expect for a completely free software package?

    Cons

Oh, I don't know, how about the ability to at least resize the panes of the different elements of the program? Being able to zoom in or out on times of music? Being able to see things like velocity and pitch bend in the editor? AUGH!

    Summary

    I QUIT!!!!!

    "Excellent package."

    July 31, 2011   |   By donkpowers

    Version: Anvil Studio 2011.007.01

    Pros

A very good collection of features assembled to meet the needs of beginners through accomplished amateurs. I really like the ability to write music in traditional notation.

    Cons

I found no negative aspects in the application. I decided to go with a more modular approach in my developments, using a VST host and plugins. The skin is not particularly flashy or mod, but hey, we're making music, right?

    Summary

The software performs as advertised, has room to grow with the artist, and I recommend it.
