For a free program, Alternate Pic View provides a decent number of editing options. Although experienced users will quickly come up to speed, novices may want to access the help file to reduce the learning curve. Also, some of Alternate Pic View's features--such as the text tool and the two-step drawing tool--are not as intuitive as they could be. Available editing tools include most of the expected ones, including cropping, red-eye removal, a few simple effects, and the ability to tweak brightness and contrast. Users also get the ability to perform screen captures, acquire an image directly from a scanner or a digital camera, and convert images among various formats. This application is a good solution for cash-strapped users who want to make basic edits to their photos without investing in a full-blown imaging suite.
