This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Freehand will not work with 10.4 - 10.4.2 Tiger. To many problems saving files, printing, writing PDFs. Many input boxes are randomly jumping over the desktop. It is real expensive, unprofessional crap.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Freehand 10 & 11 insist on saving files in the application folder instead of going to whatever system default I have selected. With a control panel like DefaultFolder Freehand just takes longer to readjust to a new location to save files. The program offers no contextual menus even though this feature has been available on the Mac since OS 8.0, and the floating tool windows clutter up the screen with no easy keystroke to temporarily hide them to see one's entire work area. Versions 10 and 11 offer little improvement over version 7 which was the previous version I used. It is markedly slower and places more demands on the CPU and the memory. Unfortunately Illustrator is still more awkward and less intuitive to learn when it comes to using basic tools and doing simple manipulations of vectors. I only wish Freehand 7 were OS X native. I would gladly give up all the fancy features for a cleaner vector drawing application that Freehand used to be.

This Windows like interface and over all confusing style of desktop not mentioning this new policies of licensing leading me to stay with ADOBE. Flash MX I have is virtually same but because there is nothing better at mean time I have to stuck with that. Anyway good news is, that Illustrator CS is great software not only in partnership with Photoshop but on it's own as well as great companion for GoLive!m Anyway to make it short not spending my money for Macromedia product comes down to ADOBE CS package which is efficient and absolutely great!

F*** Macromedia, these last few have been worse and worse. Stop adding junk and moving things around -- fix what's there and make it freakin' work! Downloading the maintenance update from 11.0.0 to 11.0.1 is way way way way way way way too time consuming and way way way way way way too much of a hassle. They require you to fill out one information gathering screen after another information gathering screen. Then they make you go through the process of building a shopping cart and issue a new serial number - all for a freaking minor maintenance release!!!! Macromedia, please go out of business. Your products are crap and so are you.

Noteably, the tool pallettes just become inactive and don't react to user input anymore and when they do they are very slow to open ... Macromedia demands high prices for what should be graded as beta software. Furthermore, updates are very, very slow appear. A very painful user experience.. I have always preferred FH to AI and have used all versions of it . This one has the potential to be one of the best if it didn't have all these nagging and persistent problems and if MM took it's user feedback more serioulsy.

I'm not a Macromedia employee, but I am an old Apple one now over eight years ago, and since...been a Systems Manager. I had the privilege of being on the beta team with some very renowned graphic artist that work on projects from everybody from MacWorld, UpperDeck, Crazy Shirts, to the Wall Street Journal. Macromedia got the job done in a big way. They are very committed...no question about it...they do have people that care no matter how much flack they have taken...they just have not communicated how much they care to the rest of the world. Which when left up to roumorville...the mind just runs "Should I switch to Illustrator". The answer is an absolute NO...and if you have Illustrator you should take an objective view to FreeHand and see how much it can make your life easier, get more work done faster, which adds up to more money in your pocket. I look at FreeHand from a Systems Manager view..."what's the best tool for my art department". At least every year I review and compare Illustrator, Canvas, and FreeHand features benefits, speed, and project completion. Even when FH 10 & 11 had their fair share of problems & stability...it still had so many features that our team uses every day that the other programs don't even come close. Yelling and scream never gets any where with anybody at any time. Macromedia has responded well to constructive criticism...with out a shadow of a doubt.

I upgraded to MX 2004 and after a few hours of adjusting and exploring the new and hidden features (I should have read the manual)-- I am VERY impressed! Started with freehand when ALDUS (remember them?) created it. Moved to Illustrator because my first job used it and now I am back... Once you learn how macromedia engineers 'think" it is very intuitive across all their products. As for the copy protection... BUY IT or HACK IT, but quit MOANING about it. It is a fact of life and those of us who have to owen legitimate copies for our businesses will NOT stop purchasing or using the products because you pizza faced kids are screaming about not being able to use pirated serial numbers. nuff said!
