"Works well for me"

March 27, 2005  |  By James Katt

 |  Version: Macromedia Contribute 3.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I was able to edit a website created by others easily with Contribute coupled with BBEdit, Taco HTML Edit, and Transmit. Contribute made the task so easy to do. It was child's play. It is a great tool for people, such as me, who are not heavy HTML coders. I highly recommend this software. Version 3.0 has been stable for me using Mac OS X 10.3.x. If you have problems with 10.2.x, you should upgrade to the latest OS X.

"Good Concept, So-So Execution"

August 25, 2004  |  By Lardlad

 |  Version: Macromedia Contribute 2.0.2054

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I don't know why certain things have to be so hard to figure out. Adding a user, in the tutorials there is an add user button in the administer panel. Could not find one on my copy of Contribute. There are juts so many things that I could not understand why the solution had to be so unintuitive. The ability to allow users to make text bold or italic was not available even though I clearly had premissions set up that way. Then I had to pull straws until repeating regions from Dreamweaver would work, even if intermittently.

Yeah it is buggy but even some of the logic behind the entire concept needs gone over and executed better.

Still if you have Dreamweaver and need clients to edit content it is better than building a web based PHP HTML editor. So I may recommend Contribute only because the concept is good.

"Wouldn't install properly."

 |  Version: Macromedia Contribute 2.0.2054

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I was left with two install windows sitting on my desktop for over 30 minutes. After I finally found their phone number on the website and was forced to press "0" to get to someone that read from a script on installation because nobody was there to help me, she said download a copy from the website and install that one instead, then enter my CD's installation serial number. TALK ABOUT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE!!! I still have yet to discover if the PayPal components are installed. (They only install with the Contribute Intallation selection and not independently. WHAT A DISLEXIC ECCLECTIC CORPORATION. I hope their CEO isn't getting paid too much. That would really be a waste. FYI: I am using Panther 10.3.3 on an iBook 500 MHz.

"Not for XHTML/CSS-based sites"

March 11, 2004  |  By Phat Banker

 |  Version: Macromedia Contribute 2.0.2054

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This tool may be fine for the old-school FONT-tag ridden school of web design, but it certainly doesn't mesh with the new school, valid XHTML+CSS-based layouts. The program has bizarre treatment of block-level elements, often replicating all of the attributes of a preceding block level element, even the unique 'id'!

Mabye version 3 of this tool will be in line with Studio 2004's emphasis on style sheet support and code validation, but this one certainly isn't.

I recommend this tool if you have to do old-school HTML e-mail newsletters (which require bad code to work), but not if you're into web standards.

"Not very good"

February 10, 2004  |  By oscarruitt_dotmac

 |  Version: Macromedia Contribute 2.0.2054

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is a typical effort to port a Windows program to Mac OS X. The widgets are all wrong and there are myriad user interface inconsistencies, both within itself and with Apple's user interface guidelines. The program tries to put everything in one window and divide that window into panes, the "rooted" style so popular with Windows programs. But this is the superfical stuff. In only a few days (total) of using Contribute, I have had numerous JavaScript errors (programming errors withing Contribute) which cause the program to stop working correctly. If you have more than one page that you are editing, switching between pages is excruciatingly slow. (With Menu Meters installed, you can watch the program usage max out for several seconds while the new page is switched in.) Table borders refuse to reposition when dragged, and after a lucky drag where one does move, the program takes a bit to show the effect. Text style changes in the editing window sometimes do not take effect, style changes are sometimes lost all together, and on one occasion all of my cascading style sheets but one were lost. Even the simple stuff doesn't work--while typing text, the insertion cursor drags behind where the new text is being placed, and it gets worse and worse the more you type. I could go on but really, this program needs a more than some kind of automatic conversion from Windows code. Anyone remember Word 6? I suppose with enough patience I'll eventually get my extremely modest site done, but I'm already looking for a simple web creation tool that doesn't raise my blood pressure.

<p>Buggy, slow, and hard to use. What more would you expect from of a Windows program by a Windows company.</p>

"I really like it"

December 18, 2003  |  By blasto333

 |  Version: Macromedia Contribute 2.0.2054

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I really love the feature of editing the page right from the server. This was a program I needed for doing quick fixes to sites fast an easily. I am on Panther 10.3.2 and I am not having any dificulties as described in previous posts. I tried it out for a bit and decided it is well worth the 80 dollars (.Mac).

"Show caution on buying Contribute 2 for Panther"

November 28, 2003  |  By VersionTrackerUserOpinion

 |  Version: Macromedia Contribute 2.0.2054

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I shelved out over 100 bucks over this programme.

i had enjoyed the trial and it worked fine on 10.2.8
but it doesn't work on Panther.

I am very disappointed.

I hold .Mac to blame - if I had enough money I would sue them. Yes sue them from the UK

"Broken under Panther"

 |  Version: Macromedia Contribute 2.0.2054

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Contribute 2 will not run after upgrading to Panther (at least not after "Archive and Install"). Some Forum posts suggest this is due to a copy protection scheme and will require completely reformatting and reinstalling Contribute and everything else- This is totally unacceptable For me, it's dropped from 5 stars to ZERO.

"Highly Accurate WYSIWYG Editor -- Tad Slow in..."

September 26, 2003  |  By schwie

 |  Version: Macromedia Contribute 2.0.2054

Summary

...Performance
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I gave this program a test run for 30 days and found that it increased my productivity by reducing my time spent on adding content to a website. I know HTML inside and out, but when I'm modifying or adding content, I now look to Contribute to get in and out quickly.

Contribute downloads the pages with one click, allowing you to edit quickly. When you're ready to publish, its just another click. I'm sure there are similar packages out there, but Macromedia really made this a polished product. Contribute doesn't mess up your original HTML code like many other WYSIWYG editors tend do, adding unnecessary bloat. Your code stays lean and mean with Contribute...

I'm hoping that a future update will improve the speed of this program. Its acceptable on my TiBook 1 Ghz, but I'm not sure I'd want to use it on a slower machine.

"Very poor showing"

July 29, 2003  |  By s. stevens

 |  Version: Macromedia Contribute 2.0.2054

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been trying to connect to our intranet and everything seems perfect until it asks for the path to the network server. It finds the web site just fine, but it can't get past this one item, thereby not allowing me to connect. I had this same problem with the windows version. Since our intranet has ftp shut off, I was hoping for something like this that I could use on my mac. The help pages are useless, use screenshots of the Windows version, and even the same terminology. They didn't even take the time to repurpose them for the Mac version. All in all, not terribly impressed, but for $99, I didn't expect much.
