"Easier to just find picture references on google."

March 24, 2011  |  By shilicious

 |  Version: 3DVirtual Figure Drawing Studio (Female) 2

Pros

Can rotate completely

Cons

The entire screen is too small, so I can't read anything. The poses aren't as diverse as I was hoping.

Summary

Uninstalled after 10 minutes. Might work for you, but was a waste of time for me. Great idea, poor execution.

"Very good for begginners. "

September 17, 2007  |  By wronglever

 |  Version: 3DVirtual Figure Drawing Studio (Female) 2

Pros

There are very few choices for figure drawing software. Poser figure artist is fine but it is very fussy about the graphics board that you have. It won't work on most computers. This software is great way to practice. Of course it isn't a subsititute for figure drawing classes. I don't think it is meant to be.

"Just a hastle"

September 21, 2006  |  By v4562s

 |  Version: 3DVirtual Figure Drawing Studio (Female) 2

Pros

Can rotate around the model, has a good skeletal form and graph.

Cons

I'm really disappointed. When I first saw the program I thought "That would be great!", becuase I live in a small area with no life-models. So I downloaded the VFDS (Female).

I'd like to buy it - but I can't use PayPal or my e-mail account.

I'd like to ask questions, but there are no forums!

The 2-d sketched outline doesn't work (I've only gotten it to work once, the rest of the time it just changes the figure to a silhouette), if it's running in the background and you click on something the perspective view moves, the free orbit light is hard to manouvre... and still! I would have bought it! But now I can't do that either!

It's a good idea, but it really needs some work and a larger help file. There's pretty much NOTHING in the help file to turn to if you have problems.

Pros

If you hate the wooden posing dummy, this is for you!

Cons

Limitation, can't be posed. But for that price, I am not complaining.

"Not a substitute for figure drawing BUT..."

April 02, 2004

 |  Version: 3DVirtual Figure Drawing Studio (Female) 2

Summary

Virtual Figure Drawing Studio(VFDS) is not a substitute to real human models nor any current programs or software does nor ever will. The intricacy of the human form like muscle deformation under the skin, the influence of gravity on the body tissue, muscle contraction, skin stretching and the way skin react to light, all these are absent in posing program even 'Poser'. But what VFDS is, a tool or even a useful utility for artist to get over that difficult initial stage of visualizing, understanding and knowing the intricacy of the human form in figure drawing. Wooden posable dolls are boring and limited to it's range of motion. Referring to flat images or photos can only reveal so much. VFDS provides that crucial 3rd dimension.

Being able to view from all imaginable angles and to zoom in and out, I was able to study and observe the all so common problem of foreshortening and perspective angles of every artist will experience. The other feature I find most helpful is being able to change the model into different modes. Cell shading, simplified blocks and simplified skeleton, even an X-ray mode was generously included to help see through the form of all the poses. This really makes visualizing easier and being able to see through helps me to draw through my drawings and getting the correct forms that I often don't.

So far VFDS comes with one figure to study. A female body with 30 loadable poses. These 30 poses are well selected and tastefully posed. Sliding the slider upon loading these poses reveals a short range of motion from the initial position of the pose to the intended posing position. Turning on the turn table button will rotate the model on the pedestal. Turning on the drawing Grid helps me in measuring the model as a visual guide. VFDS also allows me to adjust the lighting condition of the model. Ambient,Rim and Fill Light can be turned on or off. Adjust the lighting position and color could achieve some interesting and dynamic lighting effect. Deformation of the the ankles and shoulders can still be improved especially upon loading complicated poses, but you do get 30 well balanced and dynamic poses to practice on.

All in all VFDS has been very helpful to me. Twisting torsos, foreshortening perspectives, body proportions, all these I draw with a smile now. Retailing at just $12.95 even the poorest of poorest artist who use to burn their brushes during cold winters could afford it now :o). I would also suggest this to anyone who wants a fast and convenient way to practice drawing in the convenience of their room.

VFDS is easy to install and comes with a clean uninstall too.

"Not an adequate substitute for figure drawing classes"

March 13, 2004

 |  Version: 3DVirtual Figure Drawing Studio (Female) 2

Summary

Overall: This appears to be a program that was created using animations from a Poser file. As such, it is good only for general studies of position, much like the wooden posable figures often used by artists.

Features: Only one figure to study -- a female. Disadvantages of this "virtual" figure as opposed to real-life drawing are as follows: this figure has poorly formed ankles; her fatty tissues and relaxed muscles do not respond to gravity; the nuances of tendons and muscles under tension are absent; in short, good for general positioning only, not for detailed figure drawing. As such, however, the poses that are presented are well chosen (with the exception of the last one, which is intentionally erotic). It allows one to view it's pose animations from many angles, and to stop the figure at any time during the animation.

Interface: The interface focuses more on looks than practicality. The buttons are too small to be easily recognized as buttons. Once they are, their function is not always obvious.

Ease of Use: Other than interface problems mentioned above, the ease of use is adequate. All of the configurable options are readily available, once you know what they are.

Stability: The buttons do not always respond properly (the help button will be activated if you click on the slider and drag the mouse onto the help button).

Overall: May be a useful tool for one who is already intimately familiar with the human form. Definitely not a substitute for life-drawing classes for sincere illustrators.
