Editors' Review

Qihoo's 360 Security Antivirus Boost offers solid malware protection but spends a lot of effort trying to get you to download and use other Android security tools.

High marks on malware detection: 360 Security earned high scores in a suite of malware-detection and battery-use tests run by AV-Test, a security and antivirus research firm. The free version of the app checks for updated virus definitions daily; the paid version checks hourly.

Upfront access to malware scan: Tap the Antivirus tab to start a scan your device. After the scan is complete, the app displays the results and any issues it discovered.

Broad range of free security tools: The app offers a broad -- and bewildering -- collection of related utilities, including a notification manager, an app locker, a phone temperature optimizer, a game booster, a space cleaner, and a data monitor.

Confusing interface: When you launch the app, it opens windows highlighting apps that are a strain on resources and offers to remove junk files. You need to swipe way over to the right to get to the antivirus tools. Test results offers unclear results and suggestions. A pulsing icon on top displays a non-Google storefront that eventually leads to the Google Play Store. Other icons offer to boost security with no clear description of resulting actions.

Litters phone with icons: After installation, the app puts duplicate and puzzling 360 Security shortcut icons on the Android home screen, as well as an unasked-for 360Booster shortcut.

Accused of attempting to rig test results: In 2015, three testing firms accused Qihoo of attempting to cheat on antivirus tests. The company appears to have cleaned up its act, as the testing firms have once again included Qihoo's apps in test results.

Bottom Line

Qihoo's 360 Security does a good job of guarding against malware, but wading through the interface and the sales pitches may not be worth the effort.
