Built on the Chromium open-source project, RockMelt offers wide compatibility with web standards, although it initially limited extension options to protect its unique interface. Over time, it improved compatibility with the Chrome Web Store. The browser's design required a Facebook account for access to core social features, which could deter users not engaged with that platform. Despite its responsive user interface, RockMelt was noted for higher memory usage under load, which could affect performance during intensive multitasking. Following its acquisition by Yahoo! in 2013, development ceased, leaving the browser as a historical example of social integration in web browsing.
