Smart Math Calculator aims to help users perform complex mathematical equations with a deep list of functions. Thanks to its simple interface and helpful features, this program has the ability to help even those who are not natural mathematicians.

This program's interface is certain to overwhelm anyone who has never used a scientific calculator before (it features a full range of equations and function buttons), but should look normal to those who have calculated equations using similar physical models in the past. While the program looks and operates like a traditional calculator, its interface shines with a Help file that not only discusses each key's function, but also provides basic tutorials on variables, expressions, and functions. Inputting calculations proved to be simple and more intuitive than a physical calculator. By typing numbers using your keyboard and selecting calculations using the mouse, the program automatically gives the answer, eliminating the step of clicking the equal key. In addition to its quick calculations, the program provides helpful features like a library of equations and functions. In addition, scrolling our mouse over the various function keys showcased a small window that detailed what this key does and even an example of how we could use it, which is a big boost for newcomers.

Thanks to its more than helpful features and ease of use, this free program provides an excellent alternative to expensive physical calculators. This is a great download for any budding mathematician.

If you don't have Java installed on your PC, the calculator won't run.

Can not test, there's no Java on my PC.

Pros
Not only it calculates fast but the user-interface allows you to type expressions very quickly and see the result instantly.

More built-in functions would be nice, although you can define your own functions which is good.

I have tried this calculator for sin(x), cosh(x), atanh(x), ln(x) . For x=1 sin(x) returned about 50 digits. It shows that the author somewhat uses high precision arithmetic. But cosh(x) returned only 16 digits. Atanh(x) returned n/a . For x= 1E4 ln(x) was calculated a few seconds, cosh(x) returned n/a . For x=1E40 ln(x) entered a long loop. After 10 min of waiting I closed the calculator. Probably good enough for entry level college students. Definitely not good for engineering and science.

More than lives up to the CNET editors' review and the publisher's description. The program's features proved more than adequate for a college-level calculus course. Unlike the calculator included with Windows, the interface is clearly visible.

If it has a simple, one-step "clear" button I haven't found it.

Pros
I find it convenient for the sort of calculation in which one changes one variable many times while keeping others constant. One could do the same thing in a spreadsheet, but sometimes a spreadsheet is more than one needs.
Cons
I probably haven't tried most of the features. I don't want to take the time to learn things until I have a need. This is a con only in the sense that it would take some time working with this to really use it efficiently.
Summary
I tend to use this instead of any of the several more conventional calculators I have on my computer. It saves me a few keystrokes; every little bit counts.

Product is exactly as advertised. The library feature and interface are outstanding.
Cons
Once installed it took a moment's effort to keep it out of my task bar and startup, but that may have just been something I missed during installation.

Great if you need a calculator that does more than the built-in windows calculator. Allows you to declare variables, create your own functions, and use them in calculations. You can write formulas out in their entirety then press calculate.

This is essentially a software version of a high-end calculator. This calculator lets you see results as fractions. For example: -3/7 as apposed to -0.4286. I'm also a visual guy. I like to write out my entire equation. For example: ((7+SIN(3))-(7*SIN(3)))/2. You can't do that in the built in windows calculator, even in scientific mode. Every time you close a parenthesis in the windows calculator, it computes that step, thus making it difficult to remember your place, especially on long equations. The history feature, plus the ability to save equations, formulas, and variables. For example, lets say you have a linear equation 7x+3=1. You can declare two functions: fx(x)=7x+3 and fy(y)=(y-3)/7. To find the value of X when Y=0, just type in fy(1) and the answer appears. Nifty. Of course, this requires you to know a little bit about math ahead of time.

It gives a running total during complex calculations.
Cons
You close the program--you get a 'you want to quit' button. You click 'yes'. Program terminates. Then browser laods. wait. Kill browser. If Mozilla is already loaded, it forces IE7 to load. You encounter this EVERY TIME you close the program!
Summary
The Cons for me (see above) far outweighs any benefit. This the most PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE marketing approach that I have so far encountered with freeware. Forget it, there are other free desktop calculators which don't put me 'through the hoops' when I want to close them. Thanks but no thanks!
