U.S. iPhone users spent an average of $79 on apps in 2018, a revenue increase of 36 percent over the year before, according to a new report from Sensor Tower. The report, first spotted by TechCrunch, found that in 2017, revenue was only $58 per user.
More than half of 2018's revenue was attributed to gaming apps, but other categories also saw growth.
Spending on entertainment apps grew 82 percent ($8), lifestyle apps spending rose 86 percent ($3.90) and health and fitness apps spending grew 75 percent ($2.70), according to the report.
Revenue from 2017 to 2018 showed iOS users spending an average of $21 or more on in-app purchases or paid app downloads. The 36 percent spike is lower than the 42 percent growth ($33 to $47) between 2015 and 2016, according to Sensor Tower.
Subscription-based apps also grew in revenue last year. It's important to note, however, that last month Apple had to more clearly define its app subscription policies. Developers can no longer disguise a yearly subscription with a monthly price, and free trials must be completely transparent. The changes apply to the App Store and the app itself.
The 2018 revenue spike doesn't change the fact that iPhone device sales have slowed.
