Netflix recently -- and just in time for your holiday travels -- added the ability to download movies and shows to your phone or tablet. It's not the first streaming service to offer offline viewing, for those times when you don't have Wi-Fi and don't want to blow through your data limits. The following apps let you watch and listen offline, so you can catch up on Luke Cage, watch Kung Fu Panda 3, experience the latest Lady Gaga album, or listen to an audiobook, no matter where you are.

Netflix (iOS, Android)

Netflix offers thousands of movies and television shows for your viewing pleasure, and now you can download a number of them -- such as original series House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, and Stranger Things; licensed shows Black Mirror, Breaking Bad, and Supergirl; and acclaimed films Boyhood, No Country for Old Men, and Spotlight -- to watch whenever you wish. You need the latest version of the Netflix app on your phone or tablet, which needs to be running iOS 8.0 or Android 4.4.2 or later versions of either. Look for shows and movies in the Available for Download category, click the download icon, and access them from the My Downloads section.

YouTube (iOS, Android)

If you have a YouTube Red subscription, then you can save videos on your mobile devices to enjoy offline. Just visit the video you want to download and tap the Add to Offline icon below the video.

On YouTube Music (iOS, Android) you can also download music for offline listening. Tap Menu, then Offline Mixtape, and select Make My Offline Mixtape. The app will then save music based on your recent listening history. The music selection is refreshed every 24 hours when you're connected to Wi-Fi, so you'll always have new tunes.

Amazon Video (iOS, Android)

Amazon Prime or Prime Video subscribers can download select Prime movies and TV shows to compatible mobile devices. Locate the Prime title you want to download and tap the Download option under video details. For TV shows, choose the episode you want and click the Download icon. Once you have the whole file, a downloaded icon displays in the video details. Find your shows under the Downloads option in the Amazon Video menu.

Amazon Prime subscribers also get access to Amazon Music (iOS, Android), which enables you to download Prime Music titles. Just select the music you want, open the More Options menu, and tap Download. Your downloaded tracks, albums, or playlists will be under My Music.

Spotify Music (iOS, Android)

With a Spotify Premium account, you can download up to 3,333 songs for offline listening. Go to Songs if you want to see all songs that are available offline; or go to the playlist, artist, or album you'd like to download. At the top of the screen, toggle Download to green and play at will.

Audible (iOS, Android)

audible.jpg and Amazon Prime members can access the Audible app's Audible Channels library, which includes original audio series: news, comedy shows, articles, talks, and more.Amazon Prime members also get Prime-exclusive audiobook channels featuring full-length audiobooks. Download individual items within a channel for offline listening by tapping the More menu next to an item in a channel, then Download Item.
