Looking for an apartment to rent can be a nerve-wracking and time-consuming endeavor. You have to take into account the rent and your budget, the landlord, your roommates, your neighbors, the lease, if utilities are included and so much more.
But how do you get started looking for a place to live?
The Zumper app (download for iOS or Android) makes it easy to find an apartment in the US or Canada. You can filter to the perfect location by neighborhood, city or zip code. Zumper includes listings from other networks too, like Padmapper and Facebook.
All filters can be adjusted from the search map. You can select your price range, how many beds and bathrooms, and if the space is pet friendly. If the area you want doesn't have an apartment that meets your criteria, you can set up an alert and Zumper will notify you when one becomes available. Zumper's listings are updated in real-time, so you're always seeing the newest ones.
Each property listing goes into more depth, with unit and building features, neighborhood walkability, rent trends and other apartments nearby. This thorough information lets renters know what they can expect if they pick this space.
Zumper works on Android Wear, so if apartments are going fast in your area, you can get alerts sent directly to your wearable device. If you do find a space you like, you can tap on the number on the map to explore pictures of the apartment and floor plans.
If you're just browsing, you can Favorite an apartment to view later. You can tap Check Availability and send a message directly to the landlord. Some apartments have the option to schedule a tour or create a rental application in the app.
Zumper Instant Apply works with Experian to create a credit report with your application. It's important to note that the renter's credit score won't be affected or stored by Zumper when it's checked during the application process.
Despite the value of the app, it's important to remember that technology isn't perfect and realtors suggest that users be careful which apps you allow access to your confidential information.
"I'm always a little cautious when it comes to providing my personal and confidential information via a website or app," Dorenda Neihof, a realtor at Coldwell Banker Larry Rogers Realty, Inc.told Download.com. "Using an app to find the apartment and using the app to get approved to rent the apartment are worlds apart in my mind."
If you're still interested in using Zumper, the ease of the process allows almost anyone to pre-qualify, reserve and get the apartment they want fast. If you're unsure, you can still use the app to search for apartments and contact landlords for further information on a listing.
