Amazon Prime members who use Comcast's Xfinity X1 service will soon be able to watch their favorite programs directly through their cable subscription.
Amazon and Comcast have announced the launch of an Amazon Prime video app for Xfinity X1 customers. That means Amazon Prime will be accessible directly from the X1 online guide where Xfinity users will be able to browse Amazon's wide array of TV shows, movies, specials, live events, and other content. X1 customers who don't already have a subscription to Amazon Prime will be directed to an Amazon page where they can get a free 30-day free trial of Prime or purchase a subscription.
Cable TV subscribers who want to watch Netflix, Amazon, or another streaming service typically have to exit out of their station guide, change inputs, juggle different remotes, and open different apps to stream those videos. Comcast already offers access to such services as Netflix, YouTube, and Tubi TV. Integrating Amazon Prime directly into an Xfinity subscription will save Comcast customers several extra steps when they want to switch between cable TV and a streaming video from Amazon.
"Prime Video is dedicated to making your favorite shows and movies effortless to watch," said Greg Hart, Vice President of Amazon Prime Video. "The addition of the Prime Video app to X1 will make navigating between Prime Video and live TV easier than ever. We are excited for our Prime members to seamlessly find the shows and movies they love."
This marks the first time that Amazon Prime will be available through a cable TV subscription. All of Amazon Prime's dedicated programs will be accessible as will certain add-on channels such as Showtime and Starz. But Prime customers who tack on HBO, Cinemax, and CBS All Access won't be able to view those services through Xfinity as they restrict their content through Prime Video Channels on X1.
Amazon Prime is just now rolling out to Xfinity customers and will finish next week, so you may need to wait a few more days before it arrives. To snag an Amazon Prime program through Xfinity X1, press the Xfinity button on your remote and select the option for Apps. If Amazon Prime has reached you, an icon for it will appear on the Apps screen. Click on the icon, sign into the service, and look for the title you want to watch. From the Xfinity menu, you can also select the On Demand option to check out all the Prime movies and shows integrated throughout the service and choose the one you want to view.
Click on the icon, sign into the service, and look for the title you want to watch. You can then browse all the titles. More easily, though, hold down the microphone button on your remote and speak the name of the Amazon Prime TV show, movie, or other title you want to watch, and it should pop up on your screen.
Along with TV shows, movies, specials, and live events, Amazon Prime serves up original programs such as "The Man in the High Castle" and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." A full Prime subscription costs $119 per year or $12.99 per month, while a subscription to Prime Video alone runs $8.99 per month.
