Developer's Description

Record everything on your hike.

NatureNotes provides an easy way to record your experiences while taking a walk. Although its specifically useful for, say, a guided nature tour where an experienced naturalist is pointing out plants, animals, and describing various aspects of natural history, it can be used for any walk, whether it be through a city, neighborhood, local botanical garden, or anywhere youd like to record your experience.

You start a walk by creating then activating a new walk record. Once the walk is activated, you are prompted to create an "observation." An observation is meant to represent a coherent set of items (text, photographs, audio recordings) relating to a single topic at a single location at a single point in time. For example, if you notice an interesting flower along your walk, you can create an observation for that flower, which can include an identification and description, and one or more photographs. Every item you record will be tagged so that you know when and where you made the observation. If you then hear a bird signing, you would create a new observation record, take notes, and perhaps record the song. Taking a photo of the bird is unlikely with the iPhone, but if you or someone else has telephoto equipment and are able to nab a shot, then you can send the picture to your iPhone later and load it into NatureNotes into the appropriate observation from Photos.

After the walk is finished, you can edit the observations to fill in text, delete observations, or delete photos or audio recordings you don't want. You also have options to display the entire walk, show a slideshow, scan all the audio recordings, create and email a simple web site based on the entire walk, or even create and email a tab-delimited file with geotagged information for each observation for possible loading to a natural history site.

The intent of NatureNotes is to make a walk more informative and hopefully more fun. Reviewing what you saw or learned and sharing with others can make one's experience more enjoyable and meaningful.

That said, any particular walk can be cleared of all location data if that is desired. Although the georecording of animal and plant species is important, NatureNotes can be used for recording many types of experience, and privacy can be ensured in these circumstances.
