Editors’ Review
The fourth game in the Myst adventure series will answer one of the biggest questions from the original: "Where did the brothers go when they were trapped in those books?" Despite the rehashed story, Myst IV Revelation holds great potential for fans of puzzle-solving mysteries.
We personally liked the 3D interpretation in Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, but this version goes back to the conventional first-person view. The 360-degree, living environments react to your cursor or hand and offer interactive events. A three-level hint system also is a nice touch. You might not need a hint, but if you do, you'll appreciate its existence.
The success of Myst IV Revelation doesn't depend on the demo, which functions best as a technical display. It depends on the success of the puzzle-makers and the storytellers. The original Myst set a standard, and the Ubisoft Montreal developers have lived up to the task of making it look better and putting in nice interface touches, such as the record/play options. On the other hand, the story is more than 10 years old, the puzzle is a Hikari knockoff, and it's the fourth game in the series. "So, what was your favorite fourquel?" "Ultima IV." Wait. I take it all back!
