• Deep and rewarding strategy game

  Simple basic rules with intriguingly deep implications and strategies. Excellent playability Addictive once you grab the game mechanics.

  Graphic and sound are pretty old fashioned, but this is not what a turn based strategy game should rely on.

  Summary

  The game runs on a dedicated server, whose cliend can freely be downloaded. It was originally sort of a text based game, developed and improved over time by the players. The game is free to play both online and offline also for unregistered players. The 16$ quoted by the CNET reviewer is actually the full registration fee, which allows some logistical advantages over unregistered players. There is a less expensive light registration (12$ I think), allowing to play less games at the same time (6 instead of 8). Registration is permanent, that is it never expires. You register once, you play online registered forever (no time limited subscriptions). The game is a gem as it has simple rules, which allow the player a large number of tactics. The game involves the players with management, strategy, and tactical challenges rather than with graphic effects, which would distract the online general from properly processing (and killing!) his human opponents. The game is turn based, allows allied play, and features an in-game / out-game message system. Ground, sea, and air fighting and transportation units are present, on different terrains. The player can also modify the terrain during the game to improve his revenues and gain tactical advantages (ex: building roads or bridges). There is also a ranking system, both for single players and for alliances, based on Elo scoring. The player can make his own maps and submit them to the server. All of this motivates the game addictiveness, with several "veterans" often coming out of retirement after years of inactivity (I'm one of them). A game definitely worth trying if you appreciate online turn based strategy games and value strategy depth over graphic effects.

  Very easy game to learn. Online, turn-based military strategy game that pits you against opponents from around the world. This is one of the best games I've ever played. The player community is fantastic!

  Teaches real strategy options such as political stances with alliances. Makes you think far more than chess does in piece movement and strategy.

  Could use an upgrade in graphics but regardless for what the game applies in the style of combat manuvers and political aspects works well enough.

  I've been playing MetalKnights off and on for over eight years and still love to come back to it. The owner of the game will email you and help with any problems and there is a forum on the site to do the same. You can't go wrong if you like the "board game" type games. Play the "free" version for a while then go the pay way for even more fun.
