Why mess with email attachments when you can share files via messaging app? Your native Android and iOS chat apps are fine for sending texts, photos, and videos. But if you want to share a report, a presentation, a spreadsheet, or a PDF, you have fewer choices -- many messengers don't have this functionality built in. Your best option is Telegram, which makes sharing documents secure and relatively easy, or try WhatsApp for PDFs. If you mostly want to message Office docs, skip to the end for our tips on using Microsoft's mobile apps.

How can I message docs from Microsoft Office apps?

if you just want to share Microsoft Office docs, you can do so directly from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Which app guarantees that my file won't be intercepted by hackers?

Telegram offers excellent security. Secret Chats offer an additional layer of privacy: They're not stored on Telegram's server or cloud, they use end-to-end encryption, you can set the messages to self-destruct, and they cannot be forwarded. Secret Chats can only ever be opened on your phone or tablet and the device of the person you're messaging.

Best Apps for Messaging Files

WhatsApp

WhatsApp

WhatsApp only lets you send PDFs -- and those have to be under 100MB. To send a PDF via WhatsApp:

  1. Save your PDF to iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive.
  2. On iOS, open WhatsApp and tap Chats on the bottom rail, then the Compose icon at top right. On Android, you'll tap the conversation bubble on the upper right.
  3. Choose one or more contacts.
4. On iOS, when your new chat is open, tap the Send Media button at bottom right, then Share Document. On Android, tap on the paper clip up top to open sharing options.
  5. Tap your file location: iCloud Drive or the More button to add your Dropbox or OneDrive accounts.
  6. Choose your document and tap Send.
Telegram

Telegram

Why is Telegram the best messenger for sending documents? It's pretty easy, it's very secure, and you can share many file types -- including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF -- up to 1.5GB in size.

Here's how to share docs via Telegram:

  1. Save your file to your iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or Dropbox account. (Telegram does not currently integrate with Microsoft OneDrive.)
  2. On iOS, open Telegram and tap Chats on the bottom rail, then the Compose icon at top right. On Android, you must select your contact before opening the chat window.
  3. Select an existing contact or search for a new one and open up a new chat window. You can also start a more private conversation by tapping New Secret Chat. However, you will have to wait for your contact's approval before you can chat or share documents.
  4. Once your chat is open, tap the attachment icon at bottom left, then select File from the pop-up menu.
  5. Choose your file location (iCloud Drive or Dropbox) and your file. Telegram will send the file immediately, so make sure you have the right recipient.
