For a freeware game, Glest stands out at an astonishing level. A real-time strategy game in the vein of Warcraft III or the Empire Earth games, it asks players to create workers, harvest resources, construct buildings, produce military units, and ultimately destroy enemy bases.

Though its technology isn't quite as deep as the commercial games, we were quite surprised to find very well-rendered 3D textures, good music, detailed models, and a well-developed game system. The game pits two opposing factions, Magicians and Technicians, against one another, each having different structures and units. Players can choose either one, although novices might want to start with Technicians, which are similar to humans in Warcraft.

Magicians are a bit more complicated, with the ability to conjure new monsters and fire magic projectiles. Given the game's solid gameplay, good design, a small size, and, above all, a price tag of zero, we highly recommend Glest to anyone with a soft spot for real-time strategy games.

Version 3.1 includes several changes such as in-game chat, main menu background model changed, Server IPs are now stored in a file, and other improvements.

Real time is fast, graphics are good, Artificial Intelligence is efficient, large number of choices: maps, terrains, factions... plenty of mods available.
Cons
Can become slow at advanced stages if you stage a large battle.
Summary
A great real-time strategy game with plenty of options for unlimited hours of fun, always with a different scenario if you want. The game can be challenging and some scenarios are tough to beat, making it even more interesting to play.

Pros
Simple to use GUI. 20+ fan made factions with dozens of new units. Egyptian, Persians, Norsemen, Indians, dwarfs, crusaders, Romans, Elves. 15 new Tilesets change the look and feel of the game world and some of the new textures are pretty darn nice.
Cons
No large campaign mode but has a simpler lua scripted scenario system.

i downloaded this game cause it looked fun which it is.but then after a while i didnt want to play it again for a pretty long time. if your looking for something to just play here and there a little then its a good game. if not youll probablly get bored of it and it might not be worth downloading.

Pros
Glest is a fantastic game because it combines fast, action packed play with fantasy rivaled by more popular fantasy games such as Warcraft and Warhammer. It has open GPL licensing, so any mods made are not tripped up by licensing or copyrights.
Cons
The factions are of limited length, but work is being done to make them longer. The game is realatively new, but there is already a large 1500+ member forum at glest.org/glest_board.

Pros
One of my favorite games of all time was Dune II, a (now free) real time strategy game made in 1992. When I saw this game, I knew it was right up my alley! After 5 minutes of playing, I was hooked! It is very fun to play and best of all, free!
Cons
The only things I don't like about this game, are there are only two factions. However, this does not hurt the game play at all.
Summary
I definately reccomend downloading this if you need a good way to kill time, or just love real time strategy games. I carry this game all over the place on my two gigabyte USB drive.

There are lots of maps, factions, mods and addons you keep you entertained for ever, since its VRY active community is always churning out new stuff. <p>Addictive and entertaining

Only negative I see is it takes a little while to load all its stuff on every game. Other than that it's great.
