Originally developed for the now-defunct Virgin Interactive, this fiendishly difficult online space shooter is now completely free. You begin Continuum (formerly Subspace) by creating a profile, selecting a ship, and entering a zone, each of which has a different map and different rules. The basic object is to rocket around the scrolling 2D space collecting power-ups, upgrading your ship, and blasting your opponents, though many servers play variants that include Capture The Flag and Powerball. Newbies beware: zero-gravity physics, nonconfigurable controls, and merciless veteran players make Continuum's learning curve very steep. Getting the game to run was no picnic either. It crashed our Windows XP test machine so badly we had to reboot, though it ran fine on Windows 2000--well enough for us to curse the lack of a decent help file. The sounds and graphics are fine for a freebie, but the unfriendly interface makes it far too easy to accidentally enter communications mode, leaving you helplessly typing nonsense letters as your opponent swoops in for the kill. We wanted to enjoy Continuum, but frankly we found the whole experience more frustrating than fun.

This is a massively multiplayer 2d spaceship game. It is 10 years old (literally: as I write this review it is November 30, 2007, the game was released November 30, 1997.) I've been playing it since early 1998. There a many different zones with many different types of gameplay which makes the replay value extremely high. There is also very competitive leagues which have also kept me playing for a long time. The game is completely player run and is always being expanded and improved upon. I must warn you: It can be difficult and frustrating at first, but if you give it a real chance then you may end up becoming addicted to it as I have :)

Continuum has never crashed for me. The only time I've been frustrated with it is when I'm arguing with someone on there. the game gets funner the more you play really.

Basically, it's mutiplayer Asteroids on crack. Except instead of shooting asteroids, you shoot other players. Fun, fast-paced, and definitely worth the download.

You can setup chat to work in a similar way to how it works in other online games if you so wish. <p> <p>Works on all versions of windows including XP. Plenty of help and advice with technical issues is available on-line from (forums.sscentral.com) and (forums.trenchwars.com) <p> <p>Totally community owned and run. Very addictive

The CNET Editor not reviewing the game fairly. <p> <p>Unlike as stated in the editors review all controls are configurable, you can change controls to whatever keys you like or even use a gamepad. <p> <p>Has anti cheating technology that does not play nicely with badly designed anti-virus software, which can cause problems. There is plenty of advice on-line on how to fix this problem though.

There are so many different types of games to play, the community is great and close knit, and you can play with absolutely any type of internet connection or computer!
