This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I work in the broadcast sector, where we use Pyramix or Protools for recording gigs. Recorded this years' V festival and needed a backup. As we use MADI for routing, I needed a reliable recorder for the RME MADI card installed in our Powermac. Looked at Logic etc., not impressed with the overheads of all the mixing, plugins and other stuff we didn't need. Found Boom recorder on Versiontracker- seemed to be exactly what we needed. Installed the trial version, and managed to get recording 48 tracks of 24bit audio within 10 minutes. Subsequently used it for 12 hours a day for 3 days without a hitch, and with great feedback from the rotating polo thingy (you'll have to read the manual!). As soon as I get paid, I'm buying a copy, because this is the only thing around that works like Metacorder for a fraction of the cost. One thing - it would be useful to be able to play tracks other than the last recorded ones. Could there be a drag and drop onto the track numbers, for example?

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I've used Boom Recorder for half a dozen paying gigs in the field, where the pressure to Get It Now And Get It Right is intense. This program's strengths are its simple, uncluttered, no-thought-required interface and its bullet proof reliability. That and the outstanding response to user feedback by the author (I'm surprised by the comments about frequent updates). This is among the best tools in my arsenal for location work.

I was looking for a "lite" program to get me away from having to use GarageBand just to record simple stereo (with the Edirol AU-25). For that, Boom Recorder costs me nothing. Granted, I don't do anything fancy (yet). I was surprised to see that it handles multiple channels (for the paid version). I cannot comment on how well that works, but down the road I will indeed be doing video recording and editing. And from what I have seen from the other reviews, it'll handle that quite nicely. Goodbye GarageBand!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I'm a working musician who likes to record some of my gigs (and my friends bands) straight to my G4 Laptop. I own Logic Pro, Peak Pro, Tracktion, Motu's Audio Desk and Metric Halo's Beta Recording App but, I've been looking for the ultimate stripped down recording software that doesn't require: lots of memory, a steep learning curve, tons of features that you don't need when your recording and most importantly it's got to be extremely robust. Nothing like getting home after a gig thinking that you've captured a great performance only to find that your software screwed up. Of the above mentioned apps, only Metric Halo's Recording Panel comes close the the bullet proof recording that I'm looking for. The caveat is that you have to use one of their audio interfaces for it to work (I own the ULN-2). However, sometimes I want to record using a Motu Traveler or Mackie Onyx mixer with the Firewire option. In that case, I'm out of luck. There is a very pricey program out there called "Metacorder" by Gallery. It is fabulous but lists at aprox. $1,750. It is designed for people who record live sound for film for a living. So far I am very happy with this program. Except for the ability to record to two volumes at the same time and project backup features, it is very close to the Metacorder program. I feel that it is a good value, has the features that I need and will record reliably my band's long sets to my internal hard drive. I tested it last week and one of my takes created 2 mono wave files of over 2 gig each without a glitch. If you look at OS X's Activity Monitor, you see that this app puts very little demand on the CPU even at higher sample and bit rates.
