Byte video app, Vine's replacement, officially in beta testing

Vine, everyone's favorite video looping app, might be making a comeback as Byte. Vine co-founder Dom Hoffman's team reportedly sent out 100 invites to beta test Byte with plans to add more testers soon. The app tweeted the news on Monday.

Hoffman wasn't immediately available for comment but tweeted about the beta test on Monday. Hoffman also included a video that showed what Byte's interface will look like.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dumps Facebook, advocates for digital wellbeing

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she's quit Facebook even though the social media site was an important tool for her 2018 campaign.

Internet Archive rescued almost 500k songs that MySpace lost

If your MySpace music was deleted in last month's server migration disaster, the Internet Archive might have some good news for you.

On Wednesday, the nonprofit digital library unveiled the MySpace Music Dragon Hoard, a collection of 490,000 mp3 files from 2008 to 2010 on the long-abandoned social media site.

Tumblr's traffic plummets after last year's porn ban

Tumblr's crackdown on adult content appears to be hitting the site hard.

Similarweb, a web analytics firm, reported that visits to the popular blogging site have dipped significantly since the December pornography ban. On Dec. 3, total Tumblr views on desktop and mobile were at just over 520 million. As of Jan. 28, views had dropped by more than 100 million, according to Similarweb.

If you're using an unauthorized version of WhatsApp, you could get banned

If you're using a knock-off version of WhatsApp, your account might be temporarily banned from the platform.

In its FAQ, the Facebook-owned messaging app says that people using modified versions of the app like WhatsApp Plus and GB WhatsApp will receive an in-app notification that their account is temporarily banned.

Popular Android apps still sending data to Facebook, watchdog group finds

UK watchdog group Privacy International on Tuesday said while a few Android apps have stopped sharing data with Facebook, many haven't.

In December, Privacy International and German mobile security company Mobilsicher both published reports that many popular apps were automatically sharing user data with Facebook, even if those users don't have Facebook accounts or were logged out of the Facebook platform.
