Easy on your RAM and able to complete a Quick Scan in around 8 minutes, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware wouldn't be as impressive if it didn't do its job well. Fortunately, it does.
The app has some nice features, too. It supports multiple- and networked-drive scanning, context menu options, including a scan-on-demand for individual files, and a FileAssassin for killing locked files.... Read More »
Updated December 17 at 9:00 a.m. PST with a comment from Lavasoft.
A Lavasoft vice president told CNET in an e-mail:
Yes, we do have a technology partnership with Avira for the anti-virus engine technology, as our... Read More »
This spyware remover looks good and offers security fundamentals, but its efficacy is hard to judge on a clean or already-secure system. Advanced System Protector aims to rid your machine of spyware and malicious software, and it's generally a pretty thing to watch. The interface has a classy bar of tabs across the top, although the central pane feels a bit cluttered by deviating from the design scheme with a big, green Start Scan Now button.
Below that, there... Read More »
If you're thinking of switching to free antivirus protection, or are looking for a different program to try, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is a rock-solid choice. Incidentally, it's also the most-downloaded security application on CNET Download.com.
Yet, it's not enough to follow the crowd. What if you dislike the interface? Or decide that the free edition doesn't give you as comprehensive a protection package as you'd like? These things happen, you know.
Hence this slide show, which attempts to... Read More »
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a surprisingly effective antimalware tool. And, for what it's worth, it's mighty popular. It's a relatively speedy malware remover, with the quick scan taking about 10 minutes. The heuristics engine proved on multiple computers during empirical testing that it was capable of determining the difference between false positives and dangerous apps.

I just took a look at Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and it's a worthwhile security application. Some users and reviewers even think it's the best free malicious-software-only engine out there, and it's true that it has a lot going for it.

My dad and I run a little tech support place for our neighborhood (we work for food). We have seen some nasty things around this area, but this next story is the worst. One of our family friends came over with her computer, telling us it was a "little" slow. So, we dragged my huge 17-inch CRT monitor with built-in speakers across the house to our little shop (not fun) and turned on the infected computer.... Read More »

Well, one day I was logging onto my computer when I noticed a virus alert. I had noticed a week or so before that the sites I visit (like Crunchyroll) felt a little slower, and a month before that my computer started restarting randomly and continuously. I had to turn it off for a day to fix it. After I saw the virus alert, the sites I go on took about 8 seconds a page compared... Read More »

I have an XP Systemax unit that has worked flawlessly for two years. Until today. I checked my e-mail in the morning and noticed it was a little sluggish, so I rebooted--I admit, it had been a while since my last reboot. When the computer came back up, it was almost at a dead stop. Neither my ZoneAlarm nor AVG Anti-Virus would load. Any program I tried relating to anti-anything would not work, either.
After several reboots... Read More »

I recently had unknown malware that was causing Windows to keep rebooting at odd moments. Another thing it did was install a kazillion services and then have all of them running at once. It wasn't something that any scanner would pick up--and being big on file sharing, I've made it a point to keep a whole army of antimalware programs around. I'm assuming the culprit was either one that was new at the time, or... Read More »
