The Security Elite antivirus app offers many of the same tools offered by other Android security apps. This one, however, distinguishes itself by spamming unrelated notifications and commandeering your home screen, causing at least as much trouble as it promises to help with.
Pros
Malware scans: You can initiate a manual scan of just your apps or the entire contents of your phone. There is no obvious way to schedule scans, but you can turn on a setting so that Security Elite will automatically scan new and updated apps after you download them.
Related tools: In addition to malware detection, the app offers to remove junk files, clean out memory, tidy up notifications, check Wi-Fi security, monitor websites, and keep an eye on battery usage. You can also lock individual apps.
Cons
By default, takes over your main screen: By default, Security Elite replaces your lock screen with its own custom "Smart Locker" screen that displays ads. You can't immediately swipe out of it. You can't immediately see or hit the home or back button to get back to your home screen. You can, thankfully, tap the gear in the top-right corner of the Smart Locker screen to disable it.
Displays unrelated -- unwanted -- notifications: The app pushes ads to your phone's notifications system, asking, for example, if you want to download and install non-security apps. Curiously, the app includes a "Notification Cleaner" that allows you to block exactly these kinds of junk notifications.
Lacks third-party test scores: Security Elite doesn't participate in public malware-detection testing performed by the independent-testing firms AV-Test or AV-Comparatives. While many antivirus companies score well on the independent tests, it's difficult to judge Security Elite's effectiveness without third-party testing and scores.
Bottom Line
Security Elite is equal parts spammer and security app and is as annoying as it is helpful. With other useful and free antivirus apps available (such as from Sophos and Bitdefender), we recommend you look elsewhere before relying on this app to keep your Android phone out of trouble.
