Editors' Review

The Walmart Grocery for iPhone app enables you to order your groceries and other sundry items from the big box store for pickup or delivery.

Easy setup: Launch the Walmart Grocery for iPhone app and register with your name, email address, and password. (If you already have a standard Walmart account, then just sign in with that email and password.) Then enter your ZIP code or tap use current location to find the stores nearest you. We were presented with the nearest pickup store and were advised that we can change it at any time for to another location with better prices or inventory. Once you confirm your nearest location, you'll then reserve a day and time to pick up your order or for delivery.

Well laid out: The default home screen displays grocery items divided by Featured Items, Best Sellers in Your Area, and what feel like excellent seasonal choices. With Memorial Day weekend approaching, we were happy to see backyard party favorites like Cheese, Fresh Vegetables, Condiments, and Chips & Dip sections. With graduation season in full swing, we were glad to see Celebration Desserts; and with summer campfires on the horizon, S'mores Must Haves felt very apropos.

The Favorites button on the bottom rail takes us to past purchases and anything we heart in the app, to easily order and reorder items we love.

Departments takes us to almost two dozen divisions, from Grilling Essentials to Celebrations. Within Departments, you can swipe across a carousel of subsections to get to where you need to go more quickly. For example, under Fruits & Vegetables, you can go from Fresh Fruit to Dried Fruit in a swipe and tap.

A Search page lets you perform keyword searches and also shows you trending ones for inspo, such as apples, bread, milk, toilet paper, and chicken.

So much variety: Unlike some apps that just ship pantry goods or produce boxes, the Walmart Grocery app brings you everything you could possibly need from the grocery store, including Fruits & Vegetables, Meat, Eggs & Dairy, Deli, Bread & Bakery, Pantry, Snacks & Candy, Beverages, Frozen, Beauty & Personal Care, Baby, and Pets products.

Special dietary needs: If you are eating just organic foods, the Organic Shop has you covered, with everything from fruits and vegetables to meat and pantry items and so on. And its Great Value Organic line of pantry foods proves that just because it's organic doesn't mean it has to be overpriced. The Special Dietary Needs section includes items divided by popular dietary restrictions: Gluten Free, Paleo, Meat Substitutes, Non-Dairy, Atkins, and Weight Watchers. The Health & Nutrition area includes protein shakes and bars.

More than groceries: Don't let the name fool you. The Walmart Grocery app covers more than just groceries. You'll also find a Celebrations department, filled with everything from tablecloths to gift wrap supplies; a Kitchen & Dining division, stocked with everything from cookware to Tupperware; Home, Garden & Tools, filled with products like picture hangers and plant food; Office & Electronics, with everything from Rokus to Philips Hue smart light bulbs; Toys, featuring must-haves like Hot Wheels and Legos; and Sports & Outdoor, full of barbells, basketballs, and much more.

Nutritional info: Concerned about nutrition info for a product? Whether it's gluten-free, vegan, or low in carbs? Tap any packaged item and see all its nutritional facts, just like you were reading the back of a product label in a store.

Easy shopping: Whether you're browsing featured products on the home page or searching by department or keyword search or by scanning an item with the built-in scanner on the top-left corner, all you have to do is tap the Add button under the item to add it to your cart. Once you've hit the $30 minimum, tap your shopping cart icon on the top right, then Checkout, and add or approve your payment method by inputting your three-digit security code, and you're good to go.

Low store prices: Some grocery websites and apps charge you for the convenience of purchasing online or via an app. But the Walmart Grocery app keeps the already low prices the same as if you were purchasing in the store.

Changes are OK: Feel free to add or remove items or modify the time or date for your order until the day before your delivery or pickup. Go to Your Orders to begin the process.

Free, convenient pickup: If you can pick up your groceries, Walmart will have one of its employees grab everything you need and pack it up for you -- a huge timesaver -- at no extra cost.

Delivery and even pickup are not always available: In testing, we could not find a Walmart within 35 miles where delivery was possible. Choosing pickup, we found that the next available pickup times were four or five days from now depending on the location.

Delivery fee: There's a small delivery fee if you want Walmart to bring your order directly to your doorstep. This fee varies and is determined by the time slot you book.

Bottom Line

Groceries, gas, and your personal time are money, but with the Walmart Grocery for iPhone app, you can save on all three -- if delivery is available in your location. Otherwise, the ability to pick up your groceries is still a great help if you can get your order on the day and time when you need it.
