The Wider Image is produced by Reuters and it gives you access to hundreds of stories from around the world told with both photos and text. In this app, you can view the work of multiple professional photojournalists and explore stories, many of which provide additional context to current news stories. There are new stories added regularly, so you can view the latest news or browse back through older stories.
As soon as you open The Wider Image, you're ready to start exploring. Tap on a photo to explore the story behind it and view related images. Opening a story brings up other photos interspersed with text, explaining what's happening and offering some background on the people pictured. For instance, you can get a glimpse into the life of Haitian earthquake survivors, or you could view the latest month in pictures. Each story includes links to show more information about where the story takes place, and more information about the photographer who put it together. On the left-hand side of the screen, there are options to view the latest stories, explore on a map to find stories about a particular part of the world, or view the profiles of the contributing photographers.
The interface of The Wider Images is intuitive and multifunctional, making it simple to switch from one story or view to the next. You can also share the stories on Facebook, Twitter, or via e-mail, and you can save your favorite stories to a collection. This app is free, and it's a great way to get a different perspective on the news, especially if you prefer more images to more text.
