System Lock

Editors' Review

by   / February 27, 2009

This PC-monitoring utility suffers from too many issues to be a truly foolproof solution. Upon launch, you pick from one of three security levels and choose the amount of computer resources to allocate. We'd recommend picking the most efficient level, as the application hogged 15MB of memory when it ran on its normal setting. Though the interface boasts a slick, circular design, it's not user-friendly since the icons aren't marked. Besides blocking specified windows and apps, the utility takes screenshots, captures keystrokes, and records Web sites visited. Unfortunately, System Lock can t e-mail reports, so you can't observe your PC from a remote location. The logs you can access are difficult to read because the program clutters them with string data and system keys. Worse still, the program is easily detected via the Programs menu or the task manager, and we never figured out how to make the system tray icon invisible. The trial period is a short 10 days. Certain home users and parents might find System Lock suits their needs, although the truly paranoid can find a utility that's less restrictive and more clandestine.
