This start menu utility teases you with a handy function, simple layout, and small footprint, but it never worked for us. Using this utility, you hope to add a Start menu icon similar to the one installed by original equipment manufacturers. Start Menu Icon Maker's tiny dialog interface needs only four option boxes. The help file merely lists the developer's names, but you don't need help.
You start with high hopes, as you don't need to install Start Menu Icon Maker. You easily enter the text you want displayed by the icon. You use a standard browse tool to find an icon. You enter a right-click option or leave it blank. Finally, type in the command executed by the icon. The whole process takes less than a minute.
However, as soon as you click Done, you get an error dialog box. The icon isn't created and working around the error doesn't help. The publisher's Web site no longer exists. In other words, download this freeware, test it once, and if it works you're home free. The rest of us will make do without that one extra Start menu icon.
