SoftwareStorage

Editors' Review

by   / February 27, 2009

You could simply file your software install packages in a select folder, or you could use this convoluted and complex tool. SoftwareStorage's wizard and interface reveal its non-English origin; instructions and help text are slightly off-kilter. That isn't as much trouble as the wizard this application uses to accomplish its sole goal: saving software installation to a particular directory.

Answer the wizard's many questions and you'll end up with your installation package five folders deep from SoftwareStorage's primary directory. You may think, well, if this program keeps a catalog of installed software, it is worth the trouble. Unfortunately, SoftwareStorage stores, but doesn't catalog. When you open the program from your Start Menu, it merely opens the directory of all stored installation packages. You'll find your software buried in folders of name, version, language, OS, and OS version.

Now that your software install package is buried five folders under, SoftwareStorage helpfully includes a batch file to find it. The problem is that the batch file is also buried five folders deep. Simply put, this is a convoluted solution to a nonexistent problem. Novices will do best to quickly bypass this software and advanced users are advised to simply save your installation packages to a particular directory.
