This application provides basic protection procedures, but some of its system verifications are flawed. Although abundant security measures aren't featured in Security Check, it does present a good start at protecting your PC. The program downloads as a ZIP file and, as its name implies, checks five common areas of your system for vulnerability. It looks at your administrator password, guest account status, blank passwords, wireless network detection, and if you have shared folders. The program's elemental interface indicates with a check mark if an area is secure and an X if it is not. You're given instructions on how to fix any unsecured areas by clicking additional information. With so few tasks, we weren't thrilled it failed to detect our wireless network, but in all fairness, it did perform its other features well. While much of its function is provided in more elaborate utilities, Security Check offers up the basics and it's free.
