Editors' Review

As the sequel to a game that popularized the endless runner concept, Robot Unicorn Attack 2 adds new content while retaining the fast-paced and thoroughly engaging gameplay of the original. Although it features plenty of in-game items, you don't really have to spend a dime to enjoy it.

Intuitive, fast-paced gameplay: Robot Unicorn Attack 2 turns you into a speedy, robot-like unicorn that gallops through different worlds, jumping over precipices and dashing through stars, monsters, and other obstacles while collecting tokens and completing achievements that increase your rank and unlock customizations, new worlds, and even an online mode. Although the unicorn runs by itself, and you only get two basic controls (left tap to jump and right tap to dash), the levels alternate easy areas with hard ones so cleverly that the game never gets boring.

Spectacular game design: The unicorn graphics and animations look great, but the game worlds, and especially the backgrounds and special effects (space whales swimming through the air, for example) are about as sweet eye candy as you can get on Android. And here's the best part -- the game stages change daily.

Well-thought-out rewards: Tokens, achievements, ranks, levels, and unicorn customization options (wings, bodies, horns, and more) make this straightforward game highly replayable. Leaderboards, social media integration for sharing scores with friends, daily and community goals, and the online, team-based gameplay mode further increase the game's appeal, keeping you glued to the screen.

Music becomes annoying: The arcade-style default track suits the theme of the game well, but becomes annoying soon enough -- fortunately, you can turn it off. Other tracks are available, but you have to pay for them.

Lava World requires payment: While the boosters, tokens, music tracks, and other things you can purchase within the game are not essential, the Lava World is a new environment that you cannot unlock through tokens, so you'll have to pay for this out of pocket.

Bottom Line

Robot Unicorn Attack 2 proves to be a more than worthy sequel to a great mobile game. Even if you're not into unicorns or the endless runner genre, this game's engaging gameplay and outstanding design recommend it, especially if you have at least a seven-inch tablet.
