Audio-file converters don't get any simpler than the freeware River Past Wave@MP3. Using its bare-bones application window, you just browse to a WAV file and start the conversion; by default, the output file goes into the same folder as the original. The program also can convert MP3s to WAVs. Clicking Play opens the converted file with your default media player. Converting a 1MB file to MP3 took us about five seconds, which doesn't leave much room for improvement. But the lack of configurable features means you have no control over the output parameters. Anyone with the slightest interest in tweaking their audio will want to look elsewhere. Also, the program lacks batch-conversion abilities, so don't plan on using it for entire directories. Otherwise, River Past Wave@MP3 offers little to praise or criticize. It's fast, free, and simple to a fault. We recommend it for occasional users.
