Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool. Processing is developed by artists and designers as an alternative to proprietary software tools in the same domain.

Version: Processing (no Java) 0125 beta
If you're a Java beginner, this is an excellent way to get started. It's very simple to install, easy to use, and includes an excellent collection of sample programs. After using this for a while, it's easy to move on to a bigger, general purpose IDE.
It's a bit non-standard, but this is actually a good thing for beginners. Some commands have been simplified, and these are well explained on an excellent help page. And I'd recommend downloading WITH the Java run-time, as that avoids any path setup problems.
