Editors' Review

Pidgin lets you link your accounts from multiple chat apps, so you can communicate with all of your friends from one central location. Rather than having to stay logged in to multiple apps at once, you can keep in touch effectively while keeping confusion and distraction to a minimum. Supported apps include Facebook Chat, AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, GroupWise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MXit, MySpaceIM, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo, and Yahoo Japan.

Pros

Notification options: For each account you add to Pidgin, you can configure notifications individually. That means you can decide when you want to be interrupted with a new mail alert from Facebook Chat and from Google Talk separately, which is especially useful if you use different chat apps for different types of communication.

Streamlined interface: The app's main interface is uncluttered and great for chatting. You'll see all of your messages in one place, and replying or starting a new conversation takes only a couple of clicks.

Cons

Confusing setup: While the chat part of the app is straightforward enough, the setup can be a little confusing. It's not always clear what information the forms for linking your accounts are looking for, and we did have some of our accounts fail to activate on the first try during testing. There is a detailed Help document to refer to, if you have trouble. But there's nothing in the form of a Quick Start Guide that will guide you through the process quickly.

Bottom Line

Pidgin makes keeping in touch with all of your friends that much easier, no matter which chat app they prefer. Setting it up and adding your accounts can be a little frustrating and time consuming, but once they're synced, everything runs smoothly.
