2020 Pakistan Super League (also known as PSL 5 or for sponsorship reasons HBL PSL 2020) will be the fifth season of the Pakistan Super League, a franchise Twenty20 cricket league which was established by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in 2015. The league will be held entirely in Pakistan for the first time. The tournament is scheduled to take place between 20 February 2020 and 22 March 2020.
In February 2019, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, announced that the fifth season of the tournament will be held entirely in Pakistan.In March 2019, Ehsan Mani, Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board also expressed the desire to host all the matches of this season in Pakistan.On 1 January 2020, PCB announced fixtures for the tournament confirming that the entire tournament will take place in Pakistan.
The players draft took place on 6 December,with the first round taking place on 3 November 2019. Ahead of the draft, each team was allowed to retain up to eight players from their previous squad.On 1 December 2019, PCB announced the retention players list with all six teams retaining a total of 45 players from previous season.
The tournament will be held entirely in Pakistan. Total 34 matches will be played in four venues Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Multan.The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place in Karachi, while the playoffs, including the final, are scheduled to take place in Lahore.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to be held on 20 February at National Stadium, Karachi, prior to the first match of the season.
Pakistan Super League (Urdu: ; PSL) is a Twenty20 cricket league, founded in Lahore on 9 September 2015 with five teams and now comprises six teams. Instead of operating as an association of independently owned teams, the league is a single entity in which each franchise is owned and controlled by investors.
The commercial rights to the initial franchises were sold for US$93 million for a span of 10 years in December 2015. The market value of PSL in 2017 was up to US$300 million, according to Arif Habib.
The PSL season runs between the months of February and March, with each team playing matches in double round robin format; the top four teams with the best record qualify for the playoffs and culminates in the championship game, the PSL Cup Final. The league is directed out of the Pakistan Cricket Board head office in Lahore. Due to security reasons, the first season was played entirely in the United Arab Emirates. The inaugural champions were Islamabad United. Peshawar Zalmi were the 2017 PSL Champions, having defeated Quetta Gladiators in Lahore on 5 March 2017. Islamabad United were the 2018 PSL champions, beating Peshawar Zalmi on 25 March 2018. The current champions are Quetta Gladiators, who won the title on 17 March 2019 in Karachi.
The six teams will play 10 matches each and will get 2 points for every win, none for a loss and 1 point for a no result. The top four team in the group stage will qualify for the play-offs.
