News Republic - Smarter news News Republic for Android

Editors' Review

by   / October 07, 2014

An innovative news aggregator, News Republic packs in a neat and responsive interface a wealth of content from many different channels, covering Politics, Lifestyle, Sports, Technology, Movies, Music, and more. Great features such as an offline mode that automatically fetches content for you and smart recommendations make it an ideal choice for news addicts.

Pros

Great concept and excellent implementation: News Republic dwarfs single-channel news apps in terms of content, featuring not only articles but also videos and other media from leading sources, and impresses with its fluid, easy-to-use interface, which streamlines the process of news discovery and makes it thoroughly enjoyable. Selecting favorite topics and following the news with this shiny app is a delight.

Offline mode: While some news apps let you save content for offline reading, News Republic goes a step further, offering a dedicated offline mode that can be set up to grab content daily at a specific time, with or without images. This mode makes it a perfectly usable app without a stable Internet connection.

Outstanding navigation: The fluid interface, the lightning-fast hand gestures for flipping through articles or scrolling through content, and the ingenious Tag Nav, which arranges topical keywords in beautiful patterns, enabling you to quickly access popular topics, are all appreciated.

Cons

Only broad topics: While the app lets you select which broad topics to follow, such as Sports or Music, you can't delve deeper than that and follow subtopics like Football, Tennis, or Athletics.

Limited number of news sources: You can show or hide any of the many preloaded news sources through Settings, but you can't add new sources. While the included sources can satisfy even the most avid news-reader, ranging from CNN to more obscure technology websites, major sources like the BBC or "The New York Times" are missing.

Bottom Line

Not only smarter but also richer and more intuitive than most other news apps for Android, News Republic proves to be a contender for the title of best Android news app. Its cool features, graceful design, and the overall quality of its build recommend it as a must-check news aggregator.
