Editors' Review

Not a comprehensive privacy program, Mutilate File Wiper completely deletes files from your computer, eliminating the chances of recovery. Its Brand X interface is compact and lined with intuitive icon buttons and a file tree for easy browsing and file/folder selection. You can choose from three security levels for overwriting files--normal, high, and intense--though the program doesn't conform to any of the well-known deletion methods. However, we did like that we could customize our own method, combining byte patterns in any number of passes to overwrite data. The batch file deletion is much appreciated for timesaving erasures, and the publisher has included a free space wiper to botch the efforts of file-recovery tools. Unfortunately, Mutilate File Wiper overlooks the need to clear up other traces on your system such as online and offline tracks. Users looking to securely delete specific files should give this one a go, although its nominal features are usually part of the package deal.
