Editors' Review

Trend Micro's Mobile Security app for Android provides full-service security protection for your phone and earns high marks for detecting malicious activity.

Easy malware scanning: Tap a Scan Now button to check your device for malware. Trend Micro displays any suspicious apps it finds, and offers to remove them. The app also alerts you to settings you might want to adjust or turn on, such as for lost-device protection.

Control how tight a security screen you want: Trend Micro gives you control over how much information you want to see from scan results, from flagging only confirmed dangerous apps to showing everything that might possibly be troublesome. You can tell Trend Micro to trust apps it flags as potentially dangerous. Trend Micro can scan your memory card, scan apps you download from Google Play prior to installation, and scan apps from non-Google app stores. You can also schedule scan times.

High marks on malware detection: Trend Micro's security app earned top scores on the suite of tests run by AV-Test, an independent security and antivirus research firm, for both malware detection and usability.

Good collection of security tools: A free version offers antivirus protection. With a $29.99 annual subscription, the app checks instant messages for dangerous links; blocks shady websites; offers system cleanup, and lets you set parental controls, block unwanted calls, and lost-device tools.

Pricey: At $29.99 for an annual subscription covering one device, Trend Micro's Mobile Security app is two to four times more than other security apps for Android we like. For $10 more, however, you can cover five devices -- mobile and desktop -- for $39.99.

Not subscribing contributes to risky phone security, app reports: Numbering among the four things the app listed to fix was a notice to renew our subscription.

Bottom Line

Trend Micro Mobile Security offers a solid collection of security tools for monitoring the safety of your phone. While its single-device subscription is a bit steep compared to other Android security apps, you can get a better deal on a five- or 10-device subscription.
