Microsoft Selfie for iPhone

Editors' Review

by   / January 08, 2016

Take selfies and make quick edits with Microsoft Selfie.

Pros

Intelligent enhancement: Take a new photo of yourself or select an existing one from Photos, and Selfie will improve it using what Microsoft calls intelligent enhancement, which takes age, gender, skin tone, and lighting into consideration. Press Compare to see the enhanced photo and the original -- this is a great way to tell what the app edited. Move the slider to the left to minimize edits, or move it to the right for a more enhanced image.

Retake option: If you get a bad shot, simply press Retake. Instagram, on the other hand, forces you to go backward to reshoot, adding an annoying step to the process.

Simple: Microsoft Selfie's bare-bones menus and features make it an excellent app for taking and enhancing selfies on the go.

Cons

The first time is not always the charm: During testing, we found that automatic edits were not always ideal. Often they were over the top, making us look too painted over. We were able to move the slider a little (or a lot) to correct this.

No nitty-gritty editing: If you enjoy editing photos manually, you may be disappointed that Microsoft Selfie doesn't offer this option.

Only 14 filters: Microsoft Selfie offers 14 cool filters to doctor your photos, whereas Instagram has 24.

No in-app sharing: Once you've turned your selfie into a masterpiece, there's no way to share it from Selfie. Your only option is to save it and then go to Photos to share across SMS, email, or social media.

Bottom Line

Microsoft Selfie is a decent app for taking and enhancing selfies. But if you're looking for manual editing options, dozens of filters, or sharing capabilities, then this app isn't for you.
