MeteorShare is the file-sharing programs which shares movies, MP3s, applications, books or other you wish to download. MeteorShare is a list of servers that you can connect to. It has one central server that can easily be shut down instead; it employs a large amount of servers distributed worldwide. The moment you connect, you become a server as well, having thus the possibility to share files with anybody in the world.
The best thing this app has going for it is that it's not your typical, run-of-the-mill Limewire clone. I'm not saying Limewire is bad, but I was a long-time WinMX user and have yet to find a P2P program that comes close. Meteor Share comes much closer to that standard than any I have tried thus far. The interface is similar to WinMX. The information on downloads and uploads is similar to WinMX. It's not a Java based application. The up and down statistics are similar to WinMX. Adding sources to your download is similar to WinMX. I always liked the idea of a user name that WinMX had; Limewire doesn't have that, but Meteor Share does. Of those I have tried, this one comes the closest to WinMX I have found. However........
Despite coming close to the WinMX standard, this program has some serious issues. It connects to the eDonkey network, and you don't get the amount of downloads that you can get from Gnutella. The interface needs some serious work in that the interface "breaks up" when switching from one running app to another, and sometimes portions of the interface will go black. I'm running an Athlon 64 X2 4200, but it seems that this application's interface is placing isolated demands on the processor that it cannot keep up with at times; hence, the interface goes black at times. Also, it would be nice to have a choice of skins for the interface. The search needs to have an easier way to select filters, such as bitrate. Finally, the search results need to list the BITRATE. They list bitrate on the search results, but it's not really bitrate as in 128, 160, or 192, etc.; rather, it looks like they are listing SAMPLErates as BITrates. In all good conscience, I can't give this application more than 2 stars at this time. I hope that the programmers can get the bugs worked out of this application to the point where it is stable and can used reliably because I MISS MY WINMX!
