Editors' Review

MagicISO's MagicDisc Virtual CD/DVD-ROM is a free tool that lets you create and use virtual CD and DVD discs that play just like the real thing, only you don't need to open and close the disc tray. You can create up to 15 virtual discs, which you can configure like any real disc: audio CD, DVD, game disc, or rewritable disc. You can create audio programs, save them as ISO images, and play them like an audio CD without having to burn them to disc. The tool offers versatile compression, encryption, and mounting options, too. It supports a huge range of optical disc formats, including some we hadn't seen before. MagicDisc is freeware that also integrates with the developer's premium MagicISO tool for more capabilities.

As part of the setup process, MagicDisc installs a virtual DVD-ROM driver. In addition to its tray icon, MagicDisc uses a series of pop-ups and dialogs for features and options. At various points, MagicDisc offers succinct explanations of choices and features; for instance, "Why use UIF instead of ISO and ZIP?" But it also offers a full browser-based manual as well as a long list of tutorials and support options. Virtual discs created with MagicDisc appear as regular optical drives in Explorer.

Creating and mounting disc images is easy with MagicDisc's wizardlike process. We started by creating an ISO image of an audio CD. A compact dialog let us choose our DVD-RW drive or one of MagicDisc's virtual discs. We named our file and chose an output directory, and then chose the output format from a drop-down menu offering Universal Image Format (the default choice) as well as ISO, BIN/CUE, and NRG disc formats. Clicking OK started the process, which finished quickly. Then we right-clicked one of our virtual drives, clicked Mount, and selected our new UIF file. Seconds later, Windows showed an audio CD containing identical content to our original that played normally. MagicDisc let us edit, unmount, or burn our disc image to a real disc.

With 200X searching speed and no device noise, MagicDisc not only expands your optical disc capabilities but also improves them.
