Mecca or Makkah (Arabic: Makkah ) is a city in the Hejaz region of the Arabian Peninsula , and the plain of Tihamah in Saudi Arabia, and is also the capital and administrative headquarters of the Makkah Region. The city is located 70 km (43 mi) inland from Jeddah in a narrow valley at a height of 277 m (909 ft) above sea level, and 340 kilometres (210 mi) south of Medina. Its resident population in 2012 was roughly 2 million, although visitors more than triple this number every year during the ajj (Arabic: , "Pilgrimage") period held in the twelfth Muslim lunar month of Dhul-ijjah (Arabic: ).
The Kaaba (Arabic: al-kabah, "The Cube"), also referred as al-Kabah al-Musharrafah (Arabic: , the Holy Ka'bah), is a building at the center of Islam's most important mosque, that is Al-Masjid Al-aram (Arabic: , The Sacred Mosque), in the Hejazi city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is the most sacred site in Islam. It is considered by Muslims to be the Bay Allah (Arabic: , "House of God"), and has a similar role to the Tabernacle and Holy of Holies in Judaism. Wherever they are in the world, Muslims are expected to face the Ka'bah when performing ala (Arabic: , Islamic prayer). Being the qiblah (Arabic: , direction of prayer), Muslims would face it when praying.
The Grand Mosque of Makkah (Arabic: , translit. al-Masjid al-aram, lit. 'The Sacred Mosque'), also called the Great Mosque of Mecca, is the largest mosque in the World, and surrounds Islam's Qiblah (Arabic: , Direction of Prayer), that is the Kaaba in the Hejazi city of Mecca (Arabic: , Makkah), Saudi Arabia. Muslims face the Kaaba while performing the alah (Arabic: , Islamic act of worship). One of the Five Pillars of Islam requires every Muslim to perform the ajj (Arabic: , 'Pilgrimage'), one of the largest annual gatherings of people in the world, at least once in their lifetime if able to do so, including awaf (Arabic: , Circumambulation) of the Kaaba. It is also the main phase for the 'Umrah (Arabic: ), which is the lesser pilgrimage that can be undertaken any time of the year. The Grand Mosque includes other important significant sites, including the Black Stone, Well of Zamzam, Station of Abraham, and Safa and Marwa. It is always open, regardless of date or time.
Medina (/mdin/; Arabic: , al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, "the radiant city"; or , al-Madinah (Hejazi pronunciation: [almadina]), "the city"), also transliterated as Madinah, is a city in the Hejaz region of the Arabian Peninsula and administrative headquarters of the Al-Madinah Region of Saudi Arabia. At the city's heart is al-Masjid an-Nabawi ("the Prophet's Mosque"), which is the burial place of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and is the second-holiest city in Islam after Mecca.
